The bristles feel stiff, almost like straw. Is that normal?

Yes — that's the nature of hog bristle, not a defect. Stiff, springy bristles are what push thick paint and create texture and impasto. If you want soft, smooth blending or fine glazing, use a synthetic or sable brush for those layers instead.

A few bristles came out on my first use. Is that normal?

Natural bristle brushes may shed a few hairs in first uses; this is normal as loose hairs work out of the ferrule. Before painting, gently brush the dry head on a paper towel to remove most.

What's the best way to stop bristles from coming loose over time?

Most long-term shedding is from paint drying in the ferrule. After each use, rinse brush fully down to ferrule. Never let paint dry at bristle base or stand brush bristles-down in water/solvent—it softens glue and swells the handle.

Are the ferrules rust-proof? Is a storage case included?

The ferrules are nickel-plated and rust-resistant — but rust-resistance isn't rust-proof, so don't leave brushes standing in water or solvent. A bamboo storage pouch is included for keeping the set together and protected.

Can I use these for watercolor?

No — hog bristle is too stiff and holds too much water for watercolor. Watercolor needs soft brushes with a fine point (squirrel, sable or a soft synthetic). This set is built for oil, heavy-body acrylic, and textured work.
