Works as advertised, be careful when handling the packet
I used to create an ingenious sponge filter for my cat's water fountain - put these granules in a sponge which I then placed in the usual compartment. For better results, you can consider grinding them with a rock or something - but not too fine as otherwise it'll get washed into the water. Given I can make about 50 odd filters easily, the entire thing cost me 1/5th of the usual price at which replacement sponges retail on Amazon.

It's not charcoal
I don't think it's charcoal, or maybe it is but mixed with stones with colour on them. The water and soil mix was getting extremely black and sluggish when I mixed them so I decided to give it a rinse and when I did it I found a lot of small stones which were obviously covered with some black powder.
