The Mahabharata

This 3000-5000 year old epic is an absolute awesome read. Whether you think this book is mythological or factual, you will enjoy your time reading it. And you will also be able to relate to the teachings within the book regardless of them being 1000’s of years old. Go and buy it!

Ma traduction/adaptation préférée du Mahabharata. C'est l'une de plus complètes disponibles : la moitié des 800 pages correspond à une traduction (les extraits traduits représentent 11% environ du Mahabharata dans sa version originale complète), le reste à un résumé de ce tout les passages qui ne sont pas directement traduits. C'est dans ce résumé systématique des passages non traduits que réside tout l'intérêt de cet ouvrage dont on ne trouve pas l'équivalent dans les versions françaises et qui permettent de comprendre la structuration de l'épopée et les enchaînements. La qualité et la fluidité de ces résumés sont remarquable. La traduction est également particulièrement agréable (pas besoin d'un très haut niveau en anglais), l'introduction générale est pertinente et l'appareil critique de bonne taille (ni trop, ni trop peu) : des notes de bas de page pour les termes dont la compréhension est indispensable, un index précieux, un glossaire, des tables généalogiques et une carte. Le lecteur francophone pourra lire parallèlement à la très bonne édition de poche chez GF (traduction Péterfalvi avec les excellents commentaires de Madeleine Biardeau). Bravo pour ce beau travail à M. John D. Smith et aux éditions Penguin.

Non parlo qui del lavoro proprio di Amazon, prezzi, tempi di spedizione, etc, (che sono, al solito, molto buoni), ma del "prodotto" stesso. Che è ottimo! Si tratta di una parziale traduzione (inglese, badate) del Mahābhārata, il poema epico più lungo di tutti i tempi, con i suoi più di 10000 versi. La traduzione copre circa il 10% dell'intero poema, e di tutto il resto John D. Smith, l'autore (traduttore) del libro fa un riassunto. E sono pur sempre 834 pagine! Buona introduzione, glossario alla fine, tavole genealogiche, indice e anche cartina dell'India antica. Non sarà certo un lavoro per specialisti, ma soddisfa pienamente la curiosità di coloro che, senza essere particolarmente esperti dell'argomento (ovvero la stragrande maggioranza dei lettori) vorrebbero non solo farsi un'idea del contenuto del grande poema, ma decisamente venire a conoscerlo piuttosto bene. Quindi, ottimo lavoro: teniamo conto che traduzioni dal sanscrito dell'intera opera, che io sappia, non esistono in italiano, ma, se ci va bene, in inglese (peraltro credo si trovino online), e occupano spesso, nelle versioni cartacee, più di dieci volumi! E l'opera di riduzione messa in atto ci consente di scoprire nel poema - che Smith stesso confessa avere un carattere spesso farraginoso, accresciutosi com'è attraverso circa un millennio di aggiunte, integrazioni, interpretazioni, storie secondarie, etc. – addirittura un certo pathos che ci spinge a continuarne la lettura e a portarla a termine con soddisfazione. Facciamo un esempio: il famoso Bhagavadgītā, centro della spiritualità induista, non è che una minuscola frazione del Mahābhārata; ne posseggo una traduzione italiana (non dico quale, ma è di uno dei maggiori editori del nostro paese, e peraltro pare sia una versione italiana di una traduzione francese): bene, capire cosa vi succede è estremamente arduo, seguendo questa traduzione. Tot versetti, tot note esplicative (alcune delle quali piuttosto inutili) appesantiscono il lavoro; se a Kṛṣṇa vengono nel Mahābhārata attribuiti qualche decina di nomi diversi, il traduttore non può che riportarli tutti (e che altro può fare un traduttore?): sta poi a noi andare a scartabellare nelle note e scoprire alla fine che si tratta dello stesso personaggio (esiste un libro – inglese – con un registro di tutti i nomi che appaiono nel poema: sono 800 pagine!). E il tempo passa, e la passione diminuisce. Nulla di tutto ciò nel lavoro curato dal professor Smith, che, in questo libro, appare dunque come un divulgatore, più che come uno scienziato. Ma che altro resta a noi, semplici lettori? In definitiva, questo mi pare il miglior approccio al Mahābhārata che conosco. Ottimo, dunque!

First, be aware that this is not a complete translation. As the translator says, 11% is direct translation and the rest is summary. This is unavoidable since the full length work is several times longer than the Bible; I've seen various full length English translations in India and they run to 18 weighty volumes. Second, put aside any expectations of this being like the Odyssey or the Iliad. It's utterly Indian, complete with gods, celestial beings, sages and ascetics, battlefields through which runs a river of blood, mighty warriors who survive multiple arrow piercings and evil demons and other beings. Third, be ready for a style that is as exaggerated as anything you'll have ever encountered. Fourth, don't expect straight line narrative, it's full of digressions, recapitulations, summaries of elements that will be enlarged upon later - it even contains two "sermons" but not as you'll understand the term from a Christian context. So have I put you off, or intrigued you? I hope the latter, because reading this Penguin abridged version has been one of the best, most engrossing and horizon-widening experiences of a long life of reading. Much of this enjoyment came from the huge contribution that the translator makes with his introduction and appendices including a glossary of main characters. So if you're tempted, go for it. It's a story of good against evil, it's a manual of how to live your life, it's how to govern a country, it's sheer entertainment. I'm seriously tempted to get the full length translation but I'll certainly be going back to this Penguin edition.

It's not really one of the Penguin Clothbound Classics as stated, but one of the Penguin India Special Editions (the one which is not out of print yet, actually). The design is the same as the rest of the collection, but it does not contain the ribbon inside and the cover is not actually made by Coralie Bickford-Smith. The letters are a bit small to be read. And I'd say the binding seems better than the others. It'll look good in your collection, anyway :)
