Award Winner for "BEST NEW SIX SIGMA BOOK" by BookAuthority for 2022 and 2023 This 402 page book is written for healthcare leaders, managers, physicians, and professionals that are looking for ways to improve access, quality, safety, and service while reducing or maintaining costs. This book is packed with real life examples (from hospitals, medical offices, pharmacies, imaging departments, and more) which can help the reader more easily understand how the Lean Six Sigma principles developed for manufacturing can be applied in the healthcare environment to improve access, quality, safety, service, and affordability. You will learn from reading this book how to identify, reduce, and prevent any action, activity, variation, and/or expense that does not add "value" for the customer which in Lean Six Sigma is known as "MUDA" or "waste". The first chapter provides an overview of Lean Six Sigma along with a description of the 8 "wastes" and the adverse impact they have on the overall healthcare system. The second chapter provides an overview of some of the most common performance improvement models used in healthcare and some of the pros and cons of each model. The third chapter discusses 9 different approaches (i.e., walking the "gemba", value stream mapping, dynamic modeling, etc.) that can be used to "examine" or "assess" whether there is "waste" or "MUDA" within your department or organization; accompanied by real life examples illustrating how each approach can be applied in the healthcare setting. The fourth chapter discusses the most common tools and approaches that can be used to identify or "diagnose" the cause(s) of any waste or "MUDA" observed in your organization or department (i.e. the 5 WHYs, the Fishbone/Cause Effect diagram, etc.). Actual examples from healthcare illustrate how the tools can be used to determine or "diagnose" the cause(s) of waste in your department or organization. The fifth chapter discusses 40 different strategies and approaches that can be used to "treat" or eliminate the 8 different types of "waste" that might be observed in your department or organization. Approaches such as "poka-yoke", "kanban", load leveling, 5s, and more are discussed in detail and reinforced by real life examples showing how each of the approaches can be applied in the healthcare setting to โtreatโ or eliminate "waste" while improving access, quality, safety, service, and affordability. The sixth chapter discusses the most common tools and approaches that can be used to "prevent" waste (i.e. FMEA, poka-yoke, simulation, etc.). The seventh and final chapter offers a number of different strategies for leading the change effort needed to eliminate waste and improve access, quality, safety, affordability, and service. After reading this book you will have the knowledge, tools, and expertise needed to successfully apply the key principles of Lean Six Sigma in your department or organization.
