A mysterious young girl named Lela is found electrocuted in the abandoned Morgan mansion. At the request of Police Captain Ryan, private investigator (and suave playboy) Phil Winston takes time out from his carefree social life to help ferret out the murderer.Winston discovers that Lela had facial reconstruction so she would look identical to heiress Marie Morgan. Deducing that Marie was the intended victim, Winston gathers the Morgan family to the decrepit mansion in an attempt to trap the killer. The murders continue. Greed for the family's vast fortune makes everyone a suspect. In one of her first films, Ginger Rogers radiates star quality in the dual roles of Lela and Marie. With sleek direction by Albert Ray, The Thirteenth Guest (aka, Lady Beware) is a riveting murder mystery that is based on a novel by Armitage Trail, best known for writing the novel that became the source material for Scarface (1932).

"Get out of my sight before I kill you!!!"
The transfer is seriously lacking, when the images aren't jumpy or scratched there's an odd intermittent hissing heard throughout. Fortunately, I grew up watching old movies in poor condition so it didn't bother me.The plot involves people working at cross purposes and getting in each others way. A lot of money is at stake. If you pare down the possible inheritors, it makes things so much easier. So someone starts killing them off and posing them around a dinner table. Too bad the first victim was a case of mistaken identity. Someone went to a lot of trouble to make a woman look like someone she's not. The baffled police turn to super sleuth PI Phil Winston to solve the case for them, and save the femme fatale/damsel in distress in the bargain.Naturally, there are secret rooms, peep holes, a means of electrocution (don't pick up that phone!!!). Their best clue, 13 - 13 - 13 isn't much of a help. Played mostly for laughs, this entertaining (but muddled) mystery is enjoyable thanks to the actors involved.

A trip to the Past
This is the best Old Dark House movie I have ever seen, creepy and mysterious.Other reviews have outlined the story so i shall just remark on what I personally like about it. I love the way it so completely recreates the period, the women's hairdos, their cloche hats and dresses, automobiles like the Dusenberg sports cars with their whitewall tires, the spares stuck on both sides, their massiveness with maybe a 12 cylinder engine, the twenties vehicles dominating the scene in 1932 because you used things till they were worn out.Ordinary city men wore suits and felt hats, Summer and Winter. The old mansion itself covered in dust but with ornate stairways paneled walls and old fashioned telephones with dials and operators you talked to. To me this is the next thing to a time machine trip to the past.

Watch the 1943 version instead:)
I'm sorry to say that I just don't like this version. This is the 1932 version and almost identical script to the 1943 adaption "Mystery of the 13th Guest". The 1943 version is wonderful! The dialogue seemed to come alive more and didn't seem as dry with the 1932 version. There are slight differences but overall same plot.Specific to this version, the father dies leaving a strange will behind. His daughter receives the will on her 21st birthday and must go back to the family home. When the girl is found dead in the exact chair she sat in during a dinner 13 years prior. The cops and private detective begin their investigation only to end up with another dead body. Throughout the movie, there is dry humor, twists, and an interesting murder weapon for the time period.

I like old movies. If you do, too, you'll like it.
The movie is a bit slow once in a while but then most B movies from the era are but if you like old movies, you'll appreciate this one, too. I'm so glad to have a who-done-it to watch that doesn't have unnecessary gore, violence, nudity and sex that this show gets an extra star!

The Thirteenth Guest (A2ZCD DVD release)
Not bad little mystery. Stars Ginger Rogers before she hit it big with Astaire. A bunch of heirs are in danger when someone who wants their riches starts offing them. Remade a decade later as The Mystery of the Thirteenth Guest. I bought the A2ZCD DVD release and though not perfect it is probably the best available. Also available, with a different cover, from Movies Unlimited and the quality is about equal to this one. Recommended for mystery fans.

listen and you'll scream with laffs
ginger is the reason to buy this film, a silly murder mystery. the young and lovely actress was practicing for stardom and you can watch. this was a treat in the thirties, but now just put up with the silliness and watch it once...for fun. the dialogue is a scream.

Decent film quality
Reviewers of previous releases of this film have mentioned problems with the film quality, hence I bought this re-mastered version. The quality is fine, bearing in mind the film's age, without the problems highlighted in previous releases. It's a DVD-R of course, but I haven't had any problems watching the film on my DVD player.

extremely poor transfer
While the ALPHA transfer is poor, this one is even worse, if that can be imagined.I purchased this one although I already had the ALPHA dvd. I thought it was a British film transfered from the original negative because it was certified by the British Board. WHAT A WASTE OF TIME AND MONEY! The film is dark and blurred, but what is worse is that the top of the screen is cut off even though it is REGION FREE. My advice is to SKIP THIS ONE! I would send it back, but the postage would be over $6.00 from the U.S.A.

because the quality of the DVD is very poor - looks like most of it was filmed without ...
It's only OK because it stars a very young Ginger Rogers and shows why she became the star she did. When she's on screen she's the one you're watching. Unfortunately, you're mainly watching through a mist, because the quality of the DVD is very poor - looks like most of it was filmed without lighting! It's fun because it's so quaint and you can see Hollywood trying out it's murder mystery skills, but if possible, wait for a better copy.

Poor.
Very poor quality heads cut off. But about average for the price. I will try to watch it all the way through and then discard it.
