Q: How far are the detectors @ their most effective and distance to worst effective?

Hello! Unfortunately, this has not been tested by SparkFun. You would want to run some experiments to determine the worst and most effective distances. The Data sheet might have some useful info, but will need to test in your specific set up. Also, the optional PTH LED's would change the effective distances.
