This is my first hatchet. It was slightly smaller than i expected but thats my fault for not comparing the listed size to a tape measure. It was also duller than i expected. I used a simple field sharpening stone and strop and within about 5 minutes it was noticeably sharper. I was able to process these logs down into quarters fairly easily. AFTER that i used the hatchet to chunk away a spoon until it was time to use a knife and ember to finish it up. It stayed sharp the entire time and i could even carve out some pretty precise portions of the spoon. Im definitely getting a larger size to add to the capability. Mostly for fallen trees on a path too big for my hand saw.

This hatchet is likely overpriced by materials, but the loving craftsmanship and attention to quality and detail are what you're paying for. I'm ashamed to say, it's difficult to find a properly handled tool in the U.S. these days, and if I have to pay the Swedes a premium to get one then I'm going to do it. I did wrap some cord around the upper handle for over-strike protection, and oiled and waxed the handle, blade and sheath. Oh, and no star loss, but I sanded down the obnoxiously deep and paint filled Hultafors logo on the handle. I'm not much of a flashy logo guy, and the depth of the stamped logo seemed ripe for eventual splintering.

The handle is very rough and splintery. I got two splinters and a small cut from simply handling the hatchet right out of the box. I sanded it down and put a fresh coat of oil on it and it is very nice now. The fitment of the head to the handle is precise (no gaps). The head came sharp enough to shave hair on my arm. The sheath is nice as well.

Well made axe head. Blade was buffed to mirror finish, no kidding, quite sharp. Hickory handle is well made.

Beautiful craftsmanship. Worth spending the extra $ for the quality. Use it for kindle, campfire splitting, light brush clearing, and sometimes food/meat cutting while camping/backpacking. Lightweight and quality leather cover. Sharpen and treat the handle as needed and I feel it should last for many years to come.
