The one i got is extremely difficult to open. like you have to literally pry it open. is this normal or did i get a bad one?

I haven't gotten mine open yet! So yes, extremely difficult to open. Am I supposed to press in and pull up? Just pull up? I'm giving it a few more minutes and then sending it back.

What are the 3 levels of magnification?

Dear customer, of this makeup mirror , it is general use mirror, it not have magnification mirror, it have 3 lighting color:Cool light, natural light and warm light

The description says it could be powered by four AA batteries but where they would go?

Hello, The beauty mirror built-in 1000mAh rechargeable Lithium battery, continuously works for up to 1.3 hours after fully charged, no need to charge frequently any more, convenient for you to take for travelling. The vanity mirror can be charged through USB by powerbank, PC, etc.

Would it be best to pack this in my carry-on or checked bag when flying?

I don’t really know!! It could break since the case is plastic if it’s handled roughly, but you might could pack it between some tops in the middle of your checked bag so it’s padded!! Or if you have room, it doesn’t weigh much, it could go in your carry on then you should treat it carefully!!
