Are these covers transparent?

Yes, mostly transparent plastic sleeve that covers the portion of the probe you put in your mouth.

are these sterile? a couple of reviewers say they are not, but the product description suggests it is?

It's "not packaged Sterile", for daily use, non-sterile is fine. Because sterile products are generally used for surgeons, etc. I had to say this probe cover is of good quality. I also bought a thermometer together. The quality is good and accurate. Recommend to you:

Perfect and simple (see video and pic)

The product is as advertised. It’s easy to put on the thermometer and peel off the wrapping. It fits the thermometer perfectly and is the right amount of thinness and now I know I can put it on with one hand if necessary. Recommended.
