Dan Verssen Games DVG: Cards of Cthulhu Card Game

I play this game solo and really enjoy it. The components are great and the instructions are excellent. A lot ofreplayability.

Cards of Cthulhu is a must-have if you're a fan of Arkham Horror, the Cthulhu mythos, and/or are a solo gamer. This game does shine with solitaire play. Not so much cooperatively. My only gripe with it, and hence the one-star deduction, is that some of the rules are ambiguous. You literally have to make up your own rules for certain things. One shining example is the victory conditions. We know that you must completely go through the cult deck, have less than 5 minions on each board by the end of the turn/game, and have no awakened horrors. But what happens if have one awakened horror while fulfilling the other two conditions? Nothing is said about this, so I automatically rule it as a draw.It's nuances like that which prevent this from being a totally five-star experience. Another issue is that you must refer back to the rulebook constantly to check on the rules for items and followers. What's stated on their cards isn't complete, and you have to reference the rules for a more thorough description so that you're using the items correctly.Overall, Cards of Cthulhu is worthy of getting a ton of plays out of it with high replay value. The expansion, Beyond the Veil, is also an absolute requirement to buy. It adds more to the core game, plus new mechanics. Fun game. Challenging, quick easy setup.

Cards of Cthulhu is a great solo card game with an interesting Lovecraft theme. The card quality is high-- they are actually difficult to shuffle at first due to the card thickness. The artwork is very good, and the included metal coins and colored dice are a great touch and good quality as well.The game takes about 30 minutes to play solo (there is also a 2 player competitive version based on scoring points). You basically have 4 boards on which different color cards are played. You have to manage defeating cultists and the more difficult "horrors" by rolling dice combinations. There are follower and item cards to help you along the way. You lose the game if any one board is overrun, or if you lose all your experience (coins) when attacked by a horror. You win the game if you make it through the entire deck of cards.I've really enjoyed the game and have already ordered the expansion. I highly recommend this game if you are a solo card game player who enjoys this theme. I purchased it at Miniature Market for a good discount.
