The Three Little Pigs: 11 (Lift-the-Flap Fairy Tales, 11)

This classic fairytale is transformed into an imaginative, interactive story. The children love the music and narration of the CD and always get really impatient and excited about lifting the flaps and trying to guess what they will discover beneath or behind the flaps. They engage with the story and characters more in depth and it provides lively, vocal discussion amongst the children.

The format is perfect for under 5s and the story is just the right length for reading out loud. They will enjoy opening the flaps and interacting with the story. The CD is a bonus, as they will be able to listen to it in the car going home from their visit to us. I worked in a busy Children's Library years ago, and when this version of 3 Little Pigs was first published it was a great success, and I am sure it always will be!

The only reason you may be disappointed with this book is because it doesn't have much of the classic 'I'll huff, and I'll puff and I'll blow your house in' and no 'not by the hairs on my chinny chin chin'. But with having fun saying those two phrases on the appropriate pages you can make this book more traditional if you're a fairy tale purist. I like to read this book which is more of a fun modern poetic take on the three little pigs story before reading the more traditional tale to my children and it's lovely to contrast them. The illustrations, flaps and pop out last page Wolf falling into a cauldron are excellent. The cover looks a little old fashioned and uninspiring from the amazon stock photo but in reality the book has vibrant colours and the quality and detail of the illustrations is excellent. To give you an idea of the contents there are roughly 8-10 lines of poetic text on each double page spread such as: "It's time we left," the piggies said, "And built homes of our own." And as they kissed their mum goodbye, She said, "Be sure to phone." I would also highly recommend buying the Melissa & Doug Three Little Pigs Play Set which comes with the ultra traditional tale and works well with this modern version too as children can squash the houses, move and squeak the numbered pigs around and pop the wolf down the chimney.

My son likes this book - the rhymes are very well constructed and flow well, making it easy to read. The illustrations bright, colourful, cheerful and enhanced by 'lift the flaps'. Not sure the flaps of the final brick house are quite as good as the rest. A good telling of the story which is not too scary for the vivid imagine of a 3 year old and is also pretty close to the original traditional tale.

This book has stood up to reading and re-reading with nine young grandchildren, and has withstood all the exuberant page-turning and flap-lifting quite amazingly well - so many flap-books are too flimsy. As someone else has commented, you may want to add the traditional 'little pig, little pig...', and 'I'll huff and I'll puff...' elements, but the humour in the verses will help keep your sanity when you are reading it for the hundredth time! Great value.

Bought for my three year old granson, this did not disappoint. He loves turning the pages and opening the flaps. He never gets tired of having this story read to him and through listening to the CD he can tell the story back to anyone listening. An ideal gift for this age and very reasonably priced

My 1 year old loves this book. Ok such little hands will rip but there's always cello tape and he's enjoying himself so much I can't be annoyed with him, it is for him after all right? I plan on buying the whole series! It will age with him too. Great rhyming story, differs in how he huffs and puffs but my little one loves it and I love reading it to him. Buy buy buy!
