Purchase with extreme caution.
Do not buy unless your EMR is officially supported by Nuance, the manufacturers of Dragon. I have been using Dragon medical version 10 for approximately four years. Although not perfect, it worked relatively well. However, I had heard that the newest version, medical practice edition 2 was significantly better. I invested the $1500 hoping this to be true. It worked relatively the same for the first week and then an automatic software update made it dysfunctional. It would not populate free text boxes more than about 30 characters. The remainder of my dictation would be truncated. I tried numerous workarounds as well as speaking with Nuance and they said it could not be fixed because of the nonsupported EMR I was using. This includes EMDs and Meditech. I am hoping I can delete this edition of dragon and reload my version 10. In the meantime, I am dictating about 3 to 4 words at a time between pauses while I wait for it to populate the text box which is all it will allow me to do in this current version. Purchase with extreme caution.

Use Dragon it's still the best
greetings, I have used Dragon for over 21 years since its inception in 1997 from version 1,to dictate thousands of notes,an letters, during that interval. This is a must have piece of software that every physician should own. I can dictate a 99214, 2 pages in 2.5 minutes. New patient's take15 minutes. This program is not perfect. You cannot use this product without having the following. For optimal use: i7 processor,8 Gb ram, Sennheiser me3 microphone with USB adapter, and a SSD hard drive. The program itself is finicky. You need to run, "accuracy tuning," after an hour or so of dictation. This makes your speech model more accurate. With continued use, your speech model becomes more and more accurate. You also need to pay attention to your computer. You need to click on properties, and run disc cleanup regularly. if you use the right equipment, and tune up your system, you can dictate at over 200 words per minute. the best part, is not even the speech engine. Macros. Speech macros. One word or phrase can recall pages of information. I used dragon to recall ICD-10 codes, for example, I'll say, "hypertension 10" and get, Hypertension I10. Nuance also makes a program called Power PDF standard. Dragon is compatible. I use Dragon to fill the blanks of the dreaded FLMA form, that I hated. Now it's fun. Don't listen to Dragon detractors. For the price, it's cheap. You can install it on 4 different computers. You can actually remove it from one computer and move to another. Make sure that your computer is on the internet, so that your computer can communicate with Nuance. The program will save you thousands and thousands of dollars, frustration, and you will have instant access,to making a letter, note, and quickly shrink the piles of paperwork that we are buried with daily.

Works great, not too sure about price.
Recently upgraded from Dragon Medical 8.1 - only because I had to update from Windows XP to Windows 7. Previous was working well for many years. Dragon Medical PE 2 is a little faster and seems to be somewhat more accurate than 8.1 - but not dramatically so. It works extremely well for charting within my EMR. My only complaint is the price. I certainly understand why the medical is more expensive that the standard version - I'm willing to pay more to have the specialized vocabulary pre-loaded, but why 16x more expensive? The cost is the only reason I don't give this product 5 stars.

There is a special circle in hell for Nuance...
Working in emergency medicine, this software is just worth it given the time that it saves when charting after a shift. However, the price is just outrageous, it's gouging 101 when no real competition exists. I can't wait for the antitrust suit that I can join to slap them with millions in settlement fees. There is no way, NO WAY, this software should cost $1600, or even $500. They just know that doctors need dictation software and that they're the only game in town. The software visually looks like it hasn't been updated since the 1990's, meaningful updates in accuracy should be happening a LOT more often, the included headset should be a fancy/high fidelity super headset at this price, and it still makes plenty of mistakes. The backstory about how Nuance bought Dragon and then abused the guy who actually invented this technology, locking the software into a perpetual lack of development, is a fun story too. This is just like charging $600 for an Epi Pen. There is a special circle in hell for these people. But I need it, so I pay it. I'll just wait for Karma to strike. Some helpful advice: The software is reasonably accurate, but the verbal correction process really doesn't work very well. Eliminating the microphone as a potential problem is useful. Use a USB microphone so that the data is digital and noise can't be introduced into the line. Once you are using a reasonably good digital (ie USB), noise cancelling, there's really nothing to be gained by upgrading to a highest end devices - accuracy will not really improve. I recommend using a headset as this frees up your hands to type and correct when Dragon makes an error, but to each their own (some use the mouse and dictation to correct errors with a Powermike, this works too). Correcting with dictation "Correct [mistake]" is infuriating when Dragon writes out "Correct [mistake]" rather than actually correcting the problem, a problem which happens all the time.

Product is good. Support is terrible so keep that in mind
Product is good. Support is terrible so keep that in mind. Unfortunately not a lot of alternatives . Price is steep for "medical" version. Wonder why?
