How do you handwash something this big?

I have another type as well as this one. And it's bulkier than this. I washed it in the washing machine, cold water delicate, some soap, no other additives, ie, bleach. Then tumble dry, cool setting. Came out fine. If your washer is not big enough.....laundromat. This one here, has separate pockets for the "beads" and will do ok.

Are there ties in the corners of the blanket to attach to a duvet?

No. There are not any ties. It’s a standard weighted blanket.

I bought the queen size but it only covers to top of the mattress. It does not hang over as shown in the picture. Is this the way it's supposed to be?

Yes, to my understanding. It is only supposed to cover your body. I bought the queen also and it fits the top of my bed. I also bought a twin for when I lay an my couch and a child's for draping my legs while in my recliner
