Can this be tuned to a specific frequency say 102.3 regardless of signal strength or can it only be tuned to stations it deems strong enough?

As with any radio, the closer to the station, the better the reception. I tuned mine to a few stations and it worked well. I am located in Demotte, Indiana and tuned to 102.3 and got good reception. Hope this helps. I am very satisfied with this small radio. I originally bought 2 of them. Now I have a spare.

Ole' fogie here and i want this for the gym. i hate earbuds and i would use a headset. but if the antenna is in the earbuds, how does this work? thx

Not sure how it works, but it will. I’ve hooked up 3 different headsets and they all worked. It gets really good reception. A wireless headset won’t work. It has to be a wired headset. Also you might want to try different size earbud tips if you haven’t already.

How long is battery life if radio is left on constantly at a moderate volume?

I don't listen to my radio constantly - I listen for 3 or 4 hours a day - I have not yet had to replace the batteries. They are lasting a long time.
