Is it safe to use these in 1/2" thick soft wood and not risk splitting the wood where the line of nails would be?

1/2" wood is not enough thick for this nailhaeds, their shank length is Longer than wood thickness (it's little longer than 1/2"), they may not damage the wood but their tip may pop out from the backside.

Are there any upholstery tacks made for outdoor furniture?

We had, made by stainless steel for outdoors but because of low demand we have canceled it.

Very well made

Decotacks are well made. I believe they are coated with some sort of clear coat. They're not shiny but just coated I suppose to wear better. The posts are really strong and do not bend when you hammer them, and I really applied a lot of pressure. They did not bend. Well worth the money, great plastic case with sturdy locks to keep them from falling out of the case and they even give you a measuring tape. One side has inches and the other is spaced for even placement for the tacks. Really happy with them. I would suggest getting the plastic handled device that will hold four tacks at once to help ensure your evenly spacing them. It is difficult to keep them in a straight line. Nothing to do with the tacks, just my lack of skill.
