Best replacement for Gentle Gum Care woven floss
Many of us in the dental profession are mourning the loss of Gentle Gum Care woven floss (formerly made by Reach, then Listerine). Itโs been the professionโs favorite (my opinion) for years. No one knows what happened to it- you just canโt find it anywhere. So whatโs the best alternative? I decided to try out a few candidates. Cocofloss (26 cents/yd)- good sturdy floss, slightly coarse texture, medium thickness, subtle coconut flavor. Dr. Tungโs Smart Floss (14.4 cents/yd)- thickest of the bunch, very soft texture, slight cardamom flavor. Xlent Expandable Floss with Charcoal (~10 cents/meter)- medium thickness, waxy texture, nice mint flavor. Hayden Expanding Floss (~10.5 cents/yard)- only slightly thicker than normal floss, medium texture, subtle mint flavor. First a word about expandable flosses- they only expand when you are not pulling on them. But flossing involves pushing and pulling and scraping up and down. You canโt floss your teeth effectively without putting pressure on the floss. So when youโre flossing, they are not expanded. All four of these flosses splay a bit when flossing, to look more like ribbon. The thicker the floss, the more it splays. So which do I like the best? I like Dr. Tungโs. I love the thickness and the soft, fluffy texture. And I happen to like cardamom, though I will admit itโs not as refreshing as mint. It is a bit more expensive than the cheaper flosses in the group, but not on the level of Cocofloss. I think itโs worth the extra pennies. Cocofloss is good if you want a coarser texture to make it feel like youโre really scraping your teeth, and if you donโt mind paying a hefty premium. Xlent floss was a bit too waxy for my taste, and the black color is a bit odd (though I canโt see it when itโs in my mouth). But I liked its flavor the best and it feels like it does a good job. So if you want the cheapest, but effective floss, itโs the best value. Hayden floss is better than regular floss, but it comes in a distance fourth for me. Of course, you will likely have a different order than I do. But hopefully, this will give you some idea what theyโre like. Final note- none of these flosses feel the same as our beloved Gentle Gum Care woven floss. And all of them are more expensive. But to their credit, none of them come unraveled like our favorite woven floss tended to do. And all of them will do a fine job removing plaque. Once I get over the mourning period, I will probably like Dr. Tungโs just as much. RIP

Dental hygienist recommended and she was right.
My teeth have shifted a bit so that the space between them is a bit wider. Before that my teeth were actually tight together and the only floss I could use was dental tape that was flat and slippery. It was great until my teeth were farther apart. Now that my teeth arenโt so tight together, I had to double the tape and regular floss to do a decent job at flossing. I had my latest dental appointment and the dental hygienist mentioned that I was missing areas of my teeth when I flossed. Iโve always been a flosser and my teeth are usually pretty clean. Iโve never been told that Iโm missing places while flossing. The hygienist recommended this particular floss to help with the wider spaces. I like this floss; it does a great job at expanding so that it cleans between my teeth better. Thereโs a place in my bottom, rear molars that shreds regular floss and it sometimes gets stuck but this floss does not shred there. It does get a little stuck but slides out easier than the regular flosses. I donโt especially like the taste and wish there was a mint flavor but Iโm getting used to it. I initially thought it was a bit on the expensive side but thereโs a lot of floss. Plus the packaging is truly recyclable (except the inner plastic bag that holds the floss but at least the plastic is minimal). I like flossing; it makes my teeth feel clean and I like this dental floss. I miss the minty freshness of my former floss but itโs not a deal breaker. I would recommend this floss to anyone who has wider gaps between their teeth.

Best floss ever!
I never thought I would feel so passionately about a dental tool but here we are. Everything about this is perfect. THE PACKAGING This is not your grandmaโs flip top floss unraveled. No no, this thing is CIRCULAR, the Millennialโs favorite shape. To open, itโs an easy lefty loosey, no fingernail damage required. The string then comes through a slit in the inner ring to be cut with the standard floss cutting apparatus for which I am sure there is a name. Also the COLORS of the packaging are delightful- some are a delightful bright magenta and others are a light sea green- but ALL are a little bit see through so you can see how much of this wonderful tooth string you have left, unlike Johnson and Johnson who might run out on you before you even know youโre low. THE FLAVOR Nothing overwhelming here. Itโs a light cardamom taste. Now I donโt know about you, but I associate cardamom with British royalty. This adds a whole new layer of fancy to this product. THE INGREDIENTS I bought my first container of this at Natural Grocers. If youโre not familiar with this store, they are stricter than my second grade teach Miss Shillito (God rest her soul) when it comes to what they allow in their sold goods. The packaging and floss are BPA free so your fertility is safe with this one. The string is made of a multifilament polyester fiber- maybe not the best for micro plastics but it does serve a purpose. The floss is coated with a beeswax blended with candelila, castor, and/or carnauba oil and rice bran wax- all naturally derived and not industrial waste products (Iโm looking at you, canola oil). The cardamom flavor comes from essential oil. All of this is pretty safe. THE FUNCTION First of all, she thicc. This gal isnโt gonna cut your gums like a knife as other good intentioned natural flosses will- and this is because they are too thin. Our gums are sensitive souls- especially if you already have some inflammation going on or youโre pregnant. Iโve noticed an elimination of gum bleeding and pain with daily use of this product. Also, Talk about a tooth hug. The floss gets EVEN WIDER when you wrap it around your little chewers so it covers more surface area- the point of flossing is to wipe the tooth clean, and this girl makes that easy. I highly recommend this product! I was struggling with bleeding gums for a couple of months and that problem disappeared within a week of my switch to this from another floss brand. Just use it every night before sleep- yea, every night. You only get one set of free teeth and dental work ainโt cheap.

Great dentist-recommnded floss
This floss was just recommended by my dentist to help floss a problem area. So far I really like it and find it effective.

Great for tight teeth and no PFAS
Turns out I have more than normal levels of PFAS/PFOS in my blood so I've been try to replace all the likely exposure items in my life. Turns out Glide floss is a high exposure item, but it's the only floss that has ever fit between my tight teeth. After reading a few reviews of this item I gave it a try and was pleasantly surprised at how well it works. It kind of "stretches" to fit in between the teeth, but it's actually way stronger than the Glide stuff ever was. And there's no fake flavoring or other unnecessary stuff. So hopefully using this as a good floss replacement will help reduce my PFAS exposures, but I just wish we didn't have a to pay a premium for items that WON'T slowly poison us.

BEST Replacement for Listerine Gentle Gum Care
Like many, I was bummed about Listerine Gentle Gum Care Floss being discontinued, which my dental hygienist introduced me to. After trying several expanding flosses, I tried this one as suggested by an online post and I LOVE IT!!! Listerine's had more of a yarn texture whereas this Dr. Tung's one is a bit more like tightly woven friendship bracelet string (not to be confused with thread like most flosses). Not quite as fluffy as Listerine's, but more dense and shreds a lot less. Unlike most expanding flosses, which go really thin when pulled tight, it starts out with a decent thickness before expansion, so you still get a good scrub when pulled tight. You can feel it scrub the tooth when it slides against it. There's no flavor, but there is a very milk lemongrass scent, which is most noticeable when you smell the dispenser. It's really not bad at all! I think most complaints are because people prefer mint, but I never found mint floss to really do anything to your breath. Also, unlike other expanding flosses, this thick floss can actually hold mouthwash when dipped. I've always liked to dip my floss in a cap of mouthwash before using. I got tight areas that mouthwash never reaches when swishing. If by some miracle Listerine Gentle Gum Care makes a comeback, will I go back to Listerine or continue using Dr. Tung's? Well... Dr. Tung's is a bit pricey and can only be found online (as far as I know), but worth it as it scrubs between my teeth without shredding. Listerine Gentle Gum Care was conveniently found in stores, but did shred a bit at times... I guess it's a toss up until I can do a side-by-side comparison.

Great floss! It is thicker floss and does a much better job grabbing food from around your teeth

Looking for Listerine replacement
Like many of the shoppers on here, I've been looking for a replacement for Listerine's Gentle Gum woven floss after Listerine floss was discontinued. I had a little Listerine left, and bought Dr Tung and another brand to compare. (See pics.) The bottom floss (black) feels much thicker than Listerine. Black floss supposedly uses a very small amount of wax, but it still feels like a woven floss. The black floss did a good job of removing gunk from medium and large spaces between my teeth. The black floss was a little stiffer than the other two, but still seems very gentle on the gums. Dr Tung's floss seems like the exact same product as Listerine, like yarn, but it feels more than twice as thick as Listerine. For me, it felt too thick. While I was able to fit it between most of my teeth, it felt like Listerine did a better job of getting gunk out when it was deep next to the gums. Dr Tung's floss works just like Listerine, in getting food out from between teeth. A second thing I didn't like about Dr Tung's floss was the flavor. The cardamom tasted very weird to me; if they offered some sort of mint or cinnamon flavor I think it'd be a very popular option. Dr Tung's floss, overall, I thought was just OK. I can see it could be some people's favorite Listerine replacement because it's a decent product. It was very very similar material, and it's gentle on gums. If used in medium and larger tooth gaps, it is a quality floss that holds up well. It was not, however, my favorite Listerine replacement.

Great product, a bit expensive
I love this floss, but because of the cost I'm not sure if I can afford to repurchase. I absolutely would otherwise.
