They’re not completely flat. They have raised bumps to help with grip. Child does not need to wear socks when playing on these. Either shoes or barefoot.

Do they take up lots of space? And I wonder if they are heavy?

They stack from the smallest to the largest for the different sizes, with only a little storage space needed.You can put them near the shelf or under the table, that all be fine.Not heavy. Even kids can hold each block.

I wiped them down. Did not have a smell. Love the bag that comes with it.

Do the blocks have flat-bottom or wiggle to encourage balance?

It has rubber to grip the floor/ground. Should not move.
