I ordered the 5 oz tube of CeraVe Healing Ointment, which is the “new and improved” formula. I’ve used the older version for years, so I was curious to see if I would notice any real differences. The texture is the first thing I noticed. This version feels a bit thicker and creamier going on. It still has that classic heavy, occlusive petrolatum feel, but it also comes across slightly tackier and a little more set on the skin, whereas the older version felt more like it just sat on top and was a bit more slick. Comparing the ingredient lists, there are some clear formulation changes. The petrolatum content has been increased from 46.5% to 49.5%, and the supporting base has shifted a bit, with newer ingredients like microcrystalline wax, synthetic wax, glycerin, caprylyl glycol, and sodium hyaluronate, while some older components like dimethicone and phenoxyethanol have been removed. Functionally, it still does the same job, but the texture difference is noticeable in use. From what I understand, changes like this are often less about reinventing the product and more about improving texture stability, manufacturing consistency, and updating the formula to match current ingredient trends and marketing preferences. In practice, it feels like a slightly heavier, more adhesive version of the original rather than a completely different product. One thing I can already comment on from experience is that the older formula tended to separate a bit toward the end of the tube, so I’m hoping this updated version holds together better over time. Functionally, it still performs very well. The base is still petrolatum, supported by ceramides (NP, AP, EOP), cholesterol, panthenol, phytosphingosine, and other barrier-supporting ingredients. It remains one of the most effective occlusives I’ve used for dry, irritated skin. One important personal note: CeraVe is not cruelty-free, as it is owned by L’Oréal. This is the one product I still choose to purchase knowing that, because I haven’t found another occlusive that works quite as well for my skin. I don’t love compromising on that, but in this case the performance has been hard to replace. Overall, I still think it’s an excellent healing ointment. The changes feel more like a texture and formulation refinement than a dramatic improvement, but it still earns its place in my routine. Price at time of review: $11.97

Love love love this stuff! A tiny bit goes a very long way so it will last for so long. Well worth the price given how long it’ll last. It feels a lot better on than a regular petroleum jelly and absorbs well. It’s thick so you need less than you think. Great on cracked knuckles and I haven’t experienced any greasy feeling or stickiness like other products. Very gentle on irritated skin!

I have really sensitive skin and I regularly get eczema outbreaks on my hands, arms, and face that lead to dry/cracking skin. The worst is over the winter washing my hands with the cold water and the dry heated air makes the backs of my hands crack (to the point of bleeding). But this ointment heals up the cracks soooo quickly. I absolutely HATE the feel of it, but it's worth it. Also, (sorry for the gorey details) I recently ripped off a small chunk of my thumb nail and I was really worried that the nail wouldn't regrow normally in that part of my thumb. But, I put this ointment on under a bandaid and within a week or two, I noticed that the injured part was healed up and the nail was regrowing nicely. As a bonus, I noticed that all of my nails were actually lookin extremely healthy and long and my cuticles were doing better (because I always just rubbed the excess off on the rest of my nails), so now that it's all healed I'm trying to remember to use this daily anyways just because it seems to be really helping my nails.

This is great for restoring a compromised facial skin barrier. The size of the item for the price is great! One tube lasted me almost 8 months! There is no fragrance, which is perfect for sensitive skin. The application is easy and sinks in great! Whether you’re using it on your face or your hand, or even your lips! There was no leakage in the package when I received the item! It had a safety seal, which I love! Keep in mind, this is very thick and I would only use it at night! It’s very thick and It could clog your pores if you don’t wash it off properly in the morning! Overall, I love this item and it does its job well!

So the reason for the four stars and not five is the following. The description for this product states this does not leave a greasy feel or film. I have to disagree as it does leave a bit of a greasy film and feel. A little goes a very long way so start small and add more if you require it. This is what I do as I use this only for my hands due to sever dry hands from constant washing using a medicated hand wash for my skin condition that is only on my hands. This product works extremely good and is a life saver for my dry hand condition giving me hands that are soft again and do not feel like dry leather. I just started using this product on the date of this review as this is when I received it. I like it so much that I purchased the larger 12oz container for home and a 9oz container for taking with me when I'm out of the house to keep my hands feeling and looking their best. I do highly recommend this healing ointment as it does what is says with the exception of the greasy feel and film that it does leave on your skin. It is not a heavy amount but that will also depend on how much you use. I use a very light amount just enough to provide what I need for protect and hydrate my skin.

I have really bad itchy eczema dry skin in the winter. For the past year or so it continued into the summer, so I have been dealing with this frustrating issue for quite a while. Sometimes it gets so bad I end up scratching my skin until it starts bleeding and I have been desperate for an affordable solution that doesn't involve doctor's appointments to fix. I've tried lotion after lotion after lotion. From CeraVe Intense Moisturizing lotion to Amlactin Intensive Healing lotion. Nothing had been working. After discovering that ointments are much better for constant skin irritation than your standard lotions, I bought this and I am so thankful that I did. For the first time ever, I have been able to see immediate improvement in my skin when I apply this at night. The itching is soothed so quickly after applying, and it helps me sleep instead of being kept up all night from scratching. It is so nice to wake up in the morning with little to no itching or burning. I would need to apply lotions 24/7 to even see a fraction of the results I see from this in just two nights. I am bad at consistent use of almost anything but when I go too long without using this it is very obvious which makes keeping up with consistent use so easy. Sometimes I even apply this to my lips at night before sleeping and it works so well for incredibly chapped winter lips if I do that for a couple nights. It may be a little sticky and the consistency is a little thick in comparison to lotion, but the results are well beyond worth it for me. I would recommend this to absolutely anyone with harsh painful itchy skin. It has been a miracle worker for me all winter long. The tub lasts quite a long while and a little goes a long way, so the size is perfect. And it doesn't have any noticeable scents or fragrances which makes it even more compatible for sensitive skin and people with sensitive noses which is a huge plus.

I swear, this is a miracle product. I was struggling with my baby’s eczema (see before and after pics) and was at my wits end. I tried everything that was recommended to I me and nothing worked. I saw this in a TikTok video and it has been a GODSEND. It is the only thing that keeps his rash controlled. I credit his skin’s health to this and Clean People detergent sheets. How I Use It: after his bath, I dry him thoroughly and then use 2 pea-sized globs and warm them up in my hands before patting down his body. I make sure to get the places where he gets the worst breakouts, like his ankles, chest, and face. I don’t rub it on thickly but I try to coat him in a thin, even layer. Then I put long-sleeved/long pants onesie on him to seal it in. In the mornings I’ll dab a bit on his cheeks, because that area seems to always be slightly red. Our pediatrician approved it and said to keep doing what we’re doing. Our baby now has the softest, clearest skin and we’re just so happy that he’s not screaming in pain during bath time.

This ointment is fantastic for dry skin, cracked hands, and irritated areas. It provides long-lasting moisture without feeling overly greasy. A little goes a long way, and it’s become a staple in my home.

I read a lot about this salve online before I purchase it and I was a bit skeptical because everyone seemed to rave about it but I have to agree with the consensus, it is great. You can basically put it on anything minor skin related and it soothes and heals. I have tried other balms but I like this one better because it seems very gentle but also powerful. Highly recommend!

This ointment is really a miracle for itchy skin! I been using benzoyl peroxide cleanser and I follow up with my A ret cream after skin care which caused my skin to be extremely dry and itchy at night time, it’s really working amazingly without clogging my pores or breaking out my skin!
