AN ICON FOR A GENERATION...AND BEYOND
In her latest memoir, Gloria Steinem shares her experiences as a writer, journalist, and organizer, which also include some of her stories from political campaigns. But years before she took to the road, she had learned to love the life from her father, a man who wanted nothing more than the adventures of the road, perhaps to escape his overly orderly childhood. My own experiences following Steinem’s adventures began back in the 1970s, when she co-founded Ms. Magazine…and when her feminist philosophies led me and many of my friends into consciousness-raising groups, where we found our voice. In many ways, I can point to my own growth as an independent woman because of leaders like Steinem, who showed us the way, speaking calmly and insightfully despite the hatred of extremists. I clearly recall how I felt as I listened to her speak in the early 1970s, when she toured university campuses and arrived at the one I was attending. She became the iconic voice of my generation, the ideal and rational tribute to what could be if we were brave enough to try.My Life on the Road reveals much about how Steinem’s sphere of influence grew, as she shared how she feared public speaking, but eventually discovered her fears could be lessened when she began telling her stories and also listening to those of others. She found her energy in listening and in figuring out shared solutions.Anecdotes about her experiences fill the pages of this captivating book, and kept me reading, hoping to learn more. Each section includes parts that go back and forth through time, in a non-linear fashion, illustrating the points of each one. In some ways, it felt as though there was so much information that it will take another reading to fully grasp what she had to say. Nevertheless, I highly recommend this tome for followers of Steinem’s work, as well as for those who are curious. 5 stars.

This book immediately caught my attention because it is written in first person and Gloria does a great job of making the reader
Gloria Steinem is a writer, activist, and inspiring leader and I think this book was written very well. This book immediately caught my attention because it is written in first person and Gloria does a great job of making the reader feel like they're in the moment. For example, she starts a lot of her paragraphs with things like “It's 1980 and I board a crowded plane for Detroit and find myself seated among a group of Hasidic Jews. The men are wearing wide-brimmed black fedoras over their yarmulkes, the women are in dark- haired wigs..” This type of writing throughout the book made me feel like I was there with her and made it easier to picture what her life was like at that time. The subject of the book was very eye opening and interesting because it's about how Gloria made a difference in the world by traveling. She is a very powerful woman who spoke her mind and didn't let anything stop her. She believed women should have the same rights as men and I believe that too, so do a lot of people in this world, but she actually did something to try to make that change by being a spokeswoman for the feminist movement. This book is encouraging because Gloria had a dream and actually pursued it and I feel like a lot of people in this world don't think they can accomplish the things they want too, but this book is a story of her journey and how she made her dreams happen. I would recommend this book to any women particularly because this book is about Gloria's strong feelings for equality between men and women and being a women, I think we all should care about that a little. She spoke at many different huge events including the National Women's Conference just to speak her mind about how we should be treated equally and that is amazing. I am not as passionate as Gloria is about the equal rights movement but the book has opened my eyes to how important it was and how I should be more knowledgeable of things that go on that contribute to the way I live my life.I also would recommend this book to people who have a passion for traveling because a lot of people want to travel but feel like they can't because it's too expensive. Gloria's father in the book is an example of how it is possible to spend a life traveling if you really want too and how he traveled the cheap way. I am happy I read this book because it made me look at life in a different perspective; in a better way. The book opened my eyes to what pursuing a dream really is and even though it's not easy, it's possible. I also learned a lot about events that happened in the past that had to do with equality. I was only familiar with these events before I read the book but after reading it I have a more detailed description of what they were like and how important they were because they affected the way I live my life today. I think overall this is a great book to read because it's very inspiring!

"Taking to the road ... changes how you think about yourself."
"The road is messy in the way real life is messy. It lifts us out of denial into reality, out of theory into practice, out of caution into action, out of statistics into stories, out of our heads and into our hearts."This is a great book. I've read a few autobiographies and aside from David Attenborough's Life on Air, this is probably my favorite. Gloria Steinem shares tales of her adventures in such a breezy, conversational style it makes for a really easy read, but there's so much insight and information packed into her prose, you learn an awful lot along the way. Not merely about her past and character, but about life, people, American politics and -above all- the value of effective communication. Most of all, it makes you want to travel.
