This is a monumental effort by Michael Wood to write down every single major and minor turning point in Chinese history by weaving threads of cultural and political developments to compliment such a vast and complex subject. There are times where the author has dwelled into personal stories of individuals which some might find too tedious to read. However in the context of the book, they provide us fascinating insights of common lives in the grander scheme of history. If someone wants to understand the platform over which today's China has evolved, then this is definitely the book to read. One needs dedication to identify names and places in the modern map of China, but its worth an effort in the end. Review: This is a review of the product, not the contents - The book, in general, is a good quality product. The paper, printing, font size, and binding are all of good quality. The set of maps at the beginning - a clear, readable map of the extent of each dynasty separately - is useful for reference and understanding. I kept referring to them repeatedly.
