Gross
Rich people are all bad, poor people are all misunderstood. And being thin? It's the best! It doesn't matter whether you care all that much about a character's weight, Hawkins makes sure to remind you nearly every paragraph that these people are thin. Skinny wrists, flat stomachs, weighing 90 lbs, slender, ropey, tiny, all of the women are the same stock character. All the men are also the same . I can't believe I'm saying this but the book feels vaguely sexist (because all of her male characters are creeps, divided into rich hot creeps and ugly poor creeps and the women are all sad and tragic messes needing saving but then suddenly turning into femme fatales which feels cheap and unearned) and also a complete repeat of her other books. I used to love The Villa, now I see it's just the only story she can write. I'm down for complicated characters, but these are so stock it's crazy. Their backstories boil down to cancer, divorce, and rich people problems vs poor people problems. The women in this book can't do anything, have no agency, and it's everyone else's fault for not taking care of them but simultaneously, they look the other way and want to take charge and benefit from hierarchal power. None of these people care about anything but alcohol, sex, and beaches. So if you're looking to numb your mind, and also suffer through the same descriptions and references over and over, look no further! Hawkins continuously exhausts he same tired jokes—blue lagoon, gilligans island, the Robertsons, it's a drag. I wanted to like this book so bad, I gave it a chance long past where I wanted to. I'm down for a villainous arc. I love an unhinged character. That's what I expected here, but It's insanely obvious and predictable and I see Hawkins often rides the coattails of other authors in her books. This time it's Agatha Christie and it just feels like this was poorly developed and relying too much on Christie's earned reputation rather than Hawkins. I tend to feel like it's not worth it writing negative reviews but this one feels personal? Reckless girls will not wreck you with surprise, emotion, or contemplation. It will wreck you with its trite, boring premise and clone characters. Hawkins is talented, I know that, but this is not her best work. It has no thoughts of its own, nothing new or interesting to say, no character to root for even slightly, because they are all the same person just divided into male or female and then that determines how much they can get away with. The men pursuing the women and oogling them? Creepy. When the women do it to the men? Not creepy even though it's the same. Just yuck, yuck, yuck. Trash ending, trash story.
