Great way to extend coverage in a less than ideal environment
I purchased this device to help my dad with his home network. He currently has a very low-end D-Link router and several other issues that limit his current network. His home is all brick, it has a very unusual layout that includes a giant brick chimney running through the middle of the house, it has plaster walls, and he has a wireless camera system that absolutely destroys the 2.4 ghz band. I have some experience with Ubiquiti hardware in my house so I thought I would give this a try since the UniFi line performs so well for me. First, setup is a breeze and very comparable to consumer wifi gear. Unlike most consumer wifi gear, Ubiquiti (and Amplifi) update their products fairly regularly. For this reason I recommend updating the firmware as soon as you connect the device to your network. I think I clicked on the image of the mesh point in the app to get the menu and selected "check for updates". If not just play around...it is pretty intuitive. Second, move the mesh point around a lot. I tried 4-5 plugs in his house before I was completely satisfied with the results. Once I found the ideal plug, I received very little benefit from moving the antenna around on the base. Once everything was set up I was able to reach the limits of his internet service speed at the mesh point. The Amplifi did not solve the 2.4 ghz interference problem but I really did not expect it to since the mesh point was not really designed to work with D-Link crap. The situation is not ideal for a wireless network of any kind but I was very happy with the result and the ability to extend the network to the back part of the house. I did have a question during setup and used the chat feature on the Amplifi website. I received help immediately and my question was answered (there was no queue for help). Ultimately I would be better off running CAT6 and putting UniFi access points in his house, but this seems like it will work for now and improve his coverage in previously dead areas. I should have purchased the AmpliFi router as well to replace the D-Link but I will save that project for another day. Update: I tinkered with my D-Link router settings and am even more impressed with this Amplifi device now. Solved the interference problem almost completely by reducing the power on the 2.4 band to low and left the 5 ghz on high. The Amplifi was/is using 5 ghz as the backbone and rebroadcasts on both 2.4 and 5. The result is a very stable network (on both bands) in a part of the house that never had coverage in the past. The Amplifi has done a significantly better job of dealing with the camera interference than the D-Link ever did.

Works great and is fast and easy to install
This review is updated to discuss my recent purchase of the entire system. This product works great and it took only about 7 minutes to set up! As you can see in my earlier review below, I initially purchased just a single mesh point to address a dead zone in my house. The single mesh point worked well, so I ordered the entire system (AmpliFi HD base station and two additional mesh points). The new system bathes my house in fast wifi signal. My flat is in a 1920s building with lots of lathe and plaster and chicken wire in the walls. This is normally a wifi signal killer, so I had lots of wifi dead zones in my place. With the AmplFi HD system I am getting really fast signal and NO DEAD ZONES! Download speed exceeds 125 mbs in most locations in my flat, whereas before using the AmpliFi system I was getting speeds of about 40 mbs in non-dead zones. Setting up the AmpliFi system is very simple using the free iPhone app. There are only two wires in the entire system: the Ethernet cable that connects the base station to your modem and the power cord for the base station. Each mesh point plugs directly into a wall power socket. Here is my review of my earlier purchase of just a single mesh point. This works just as well as promised. I have a wi-fi dead zone that has challenged my Netgear range extender and defeated my extender from Almond. I was desperate for a solution so I looked into mesh systems, and chose AmpliFi. I did not buy the entire system, but simply purchased a single Mesh Point HD. It wirelessly connects to my Arris cable router located at the other end of my house. The Mesh Point HD delivers speeds nearly as fast as the router itself. Plus, it takes less than two minutes set-up via an app that you download onto your phone or tablet. Other advantages: the Mesh Point does not require a different address (e,g, "_ext5") as do most range extenders, therefore you do not have to change network names in different parts of the house.

Not as easy to set up as they would have you believe...FIXED
I have a fair amount of home networking experience. I use Google mesh and have set up countless smart tvs, wifi cameras from nest, Yi, etc and various routers, access points, range extenders, smart home hubs, home automation etc. I'm no stranger to minor glitches and am able to overcome most. I purchased these because of the range and supposed ease of set up. They are NOT intuitive, the directions are not very helpful. I haven't tried customer service, that's my next step but I'm losing patience fast. These are large and heavy...sturdy. They plug directly into an outlet. They have small leds and sounds that are supposed to clue you in when they are ready for set up, when they are working etc....the sounds were hit or miss. There should be a simple button on the app to add a mesh point (similar to Google wifi), there is not. It's a process to just add an additional point. They do not automatically add or recognize the additional points. Once set up the points go offline constantly....even though for testing I had them in the same 400 sq foot room. The app is not very good, not like Google mesh at ALL...you can't use the app to check the mesh like you can google, it doesn't automatically notify you when something is offline. It's hard to know the range, because the points continuously go offline. In fact, it's hard to tell if it works at all. I'll try them again in a few months when the app is more intuitive and user friendly, and when the points stay connected. Right now, there is definitely room for improvement. I will be sending it back...all of it... the router and two points, along with the additional THREE I purchase to expand the range. That's over $600 of equipment I needed and wanted to like but couldn't. Edited - I added a star...after several days the antenna firmware finally updated and now they are being recognized by the router. Took about 10 hard resets to finally trigger the firmware updates, but it finally happened. Will test them out and revise reviews accordingly. Guys at amplifi....it really shouldn't be this hard...simplify your app., make it more intuitive and user friendly, and make the firmware updates more reliable, or have a button to check for firmware...that would have saved me hours of resetting and trying to configure Update the company pushed a firmware update that prompts you to update and it is MUCH better. As a result, I have no issues now and updated the rating. My system is in a vacation home 3000 miles away and I LOVE being able to remotely monitor and reset the router and points.

The work all around my house.
They form a nice mesh, and I haven't had any issues with "too much traffic" slowing down my Apple TV device. However, I have had to use the 2.4GHz radio for the backhaul, because the 5GHz signal is too weak from the mesh points.

Works great - instructions included for set up help
I am astonished at how well this works. I've tried other wifi extenders that increased my signal strength, but the download speed was slower. This is the first extender I've ever tried that actually increased my speed! Connecting to the router on the other side of my house, I would usually get a speed of 70 mbps with a signal strength of 2 bars. With the AmpliFi I get 110 mbs with 4 bars of signal! I'm finally getting the speed that I'm paying my ISP for. One caveat - though easy to set up, the phone app you use to set it up has a bug. Here's an explanation from Androidpolice.com how to get past the problem: "Unfortunately, this is where you will first hit the bug in the AmpliFi app: for some reason, after finishing setup, it will try and try to connect to your network and see your mesh point, but it won't. I forced a reconnect a few times to no avail. Then, after looking at the mesh point and seeing it was lighting up 5 solid blue LEDs which indicate it was working, I grew a little dubious of the app, so I opened the side menu, tapped on Switch AmpliFi and chose I already have configured AmpliFi. And there you have it, it showed up in the app and everything was fine. After the initial setup, I discovered that my AMPHD needed a firmware update so I started that process. It too was easy: a minute or two and everything was ready, except that once again, the app threw the "Unable to locate device" page at me. This time, I knew what to do and instantly went back to the menu and connected manually. Honestly this is exasperating. This bug has been there for months and months in the AmpliFi app, and the team should have fixed it by now. I'm sure there are users wondering why their mesh points won't work and the answer is they're working just fine, it's just the app that's having trouble transitioning from the setup state to the connected state."

This is the one you want when you need professional Wi-Fi extension
There are a bunch of wifi extenders out on the market. If you truly want one that grabs your existing signal and boosts it to a whole new area of your property, this is the one to buy. I have three of them that I use. One sits at the back door and extends my signal throughout the large patio area. Another extends my signal from the house to the garage which is 60 feet of so from the house. Powerful enough to drive three cameras. Works perfectly. Because we are rural at our home, we have an emergency generator. It is Wi-Fi enabled yet the garage extender doesn't reach to it. I added another extender and now I can control the generator from my phone. These are easy to setup. You download the app to your phone, grab the signal you want to extend and that's it. Really easy, but the most powerful of all the extenders out there. Don't make the mistake of buying some cheap toy when you need professional tools. This is the real deal.

Don't buy this product
This is an update to my first review below. After a month of ownership, my advice is steer clear of this one. After the rocky setup and occasionally successful extension of the wifi into my back yard, the Amplifi consistently causes both my PC and my iPad to fail to connect to wifi when I am clearly within range. It's evident that the amilifi is the problem since unplugging it from the wall immediately resolves the problem. This has happened dozens of times with only intermittent correct connection. Try something else. ----------------------- The good news is that the MeshPoint seems to be functioning OK and has extended my wifi reach to the outdoors which was my goal. The bad news is that the setup application and process is a complete disaster. After going through the setup steps which were easy enough, the device then signaled that it was properly configured to my Spectrum wifi but the app says that the setup failed. The app then directed me to connect to a wifi address it specified which could not be found by my iphone or PC. Incidentally, despite being advertised there is no setup app for iPad, only iPhone. The app then directed me to log out and start over, but guess what, there's no logout screen??? Wasted a good hour on this and finally just tested the device which actually seems to be working OK. The iPhone application however will not recognize or control the device and still wants me to connect to the non-existent wifi address. Really a mixed bag.

Easy to set up, works with other brand routers too
What's great about this product is that it does not require desk space, is easy to set up, and works with other routers (Linksys in my case), and not just with Amplifi products.
