Overall, squirrel grade at best.
Freshness-A 2022 California crop shipped to a wholesaler in NJ (approx 2845 miles) early 2023 and later to Amazon in the same city of NJ, followed by another shipment and unknown period of storage to Nampa ID (2473 miles) until I received them at another location in ID (224 miles). The package BEST BY label is Jan 01 2025. GOOD LUCK! The enclosed photo represents no more than 30 walnuts cracked open for consumption. In each of those walnuts, when shaken, the meat could be felt and heard shifting inside the shell and the white spots on the meat in the photo show the evidence of handling and transporting the walnuts approximately 5542, most likely road miles. Taste-Some of the walnuts obviously contained nothing to taste, others contained appealing meat but also contained the taste of a walnut beyond it's prime for consumption, certainly not the flavor you would want to transfer to any baked goods. Some of the walnut halves showed signs of the meat drying out at the ends. A true assessment would show that many of the walnuts looked, smelled and tasted good from the shell and when included in brownies. All things considered for future walnut purchases, I will consider paying the extra cost for the freshness of the current year's crop and eliminate unknown storage and any circuitous routing from California, with direct shipping to my home. BTW, Amazon will not accept returns, eatable or not! The growers state whether they will or not!

Consistency?
It seems like we didnโt get the same amount this time.

Nostalgia
As a child in the 90s in Florida. It was common for me to eat walnuts from the shell. It wasn't uncommon to see people having them in a bowl for guests with a nut cracker near the bowl. Years went by I had almost forgotten about having them this way. Like a lot of people in recent times I just got the raw bagged shelled ones. As you may know walnuts are one of the most healthiest foods you can consume. It's a different texture and flavor experience eating unshelled vs shelled. Last week someone mentioned "who would eat a walnut from the shell it seems like so much work" it unlocked a memory. I replied "I use to eat them that way as a kid". I'm glad Amazon had these. The product has a great flavor, very fresh flavor and texture. I use to buy a 3lb bag of shelled walnuts on Amazon. I'm going to switch to these permanently. Unshelled walnuts are fresher, more nutrients and are cheaper.
