Can you wash gentle cycle or hand wash only?

Hi, gentle cycle wash is fine just be sure to use gentle detergent and no softener for the hood. Air dry only recommended

I purchased one and it smells badly. are these machine washable and will washing them null a return if the smell doesn't dissipate?
