Does the outside get hot when you use it as a straightener? Is it easy to accidentally burn yourself?

No it doesn't get hot, thats one of the things I really like about it. I is easy to use, and heats up really fast, but you can hold the outside and it is not hot to your hands.

How wide is this flat iron?

The plate is about 1 inch. It heats up very quickly and the round body makes it suitable for making really nice curls. I highly recommend it!
