How is this for people that have not read the books? I have but my roommates have not.

I haven't read the books yet and love to play the game. We've used this as a start to player characters in Dungeons and Dragons. Build your PC off what you ended up with in the game. We weren't even aware there were books until much later.

Can i combine this with the core game, or do i have to remove cards like the name of the wind expansion?

We combine with the core game, just so we have more boards and can have more than 4 people playing. If you have people who don't know the books, then it might lead to confusion, but I think the base game and this game work well together.

Is this a game on its own, or is there a base game that this is an expansion to?

you can play this on its own. the mechanics are a little different than the base game.

No. It’s based on the Stormlight Archive series. Although, there is also a board game based on the Mistborn series (super fun too)
