Are these really thick?

I would say they are about twice the thickness of a standard crew sock. The thickness is noticeable at the bottom of your foot.

why do the more expensive ones have rubber and less cotton?

I’m not exactly sure. I bought the black ones for my husband. They are thin and tight. Very low cotton content. Hope that helps.

In this case, it is pairs. It's good you ask. Some are sold as individual socks. Huh!

Do these get fuzz balls?

No. I love these socks. After several washings they fit as sung as the day I bought them and they do not get the little balls of fuzz that others I've bought tend to. When I need new ones I'm definitely getting these again.
