This is a great lens! Don't let a couple bad reviews persuade otherwise.
For the price, this lens is a great lens! On my D7200, it's very sharp from wide open at any focal length. Especially with the awesome AF of D7200, it can focus near complete darkness in an instant. The VR works very well. I can get sharp photos even at 1/20s at 450mm. About half are sharp at 1/10 and lower. And it's very light and small considering the reach of 450mm. It's a great travel lens. With the high ISO performance of modern DSLR's and large file size, this lens is highly versatile. And Nikon is planning to release firmware update for D7200 to include the VR control, which is no big deal for me. Overall, I'm very happy with it. Yes, the soft case and hood is not included but as an experienced photographer it's not a big deal. I don't use the soft case anyway and I already had a screw in hood. The matching hood is not even available yet. But, I like the metal screw in hood better, which sells for less than $10.

Super lense
Great lense. Very sharp even at 300mm. Very light. Zoom ring moves pretty easy. I will see after I walk around if it creeps. The lense does not have a switch for VR so you have to go into your menus and turn on 'Optical VR'. Make sure your camera can do this before you buy. I use a D7500. But would recommend

Amazing lens for travel—by far my favorite!
I can’t say enough amazing things about this lens. It’s my go-to lens for travel (and just about anything else!) It was worth every penny when I found myself on an island with puffins for two hours. I wouldn’t consider buying a lens without the auto image stabilization—worth the additional cost for sure. Image quality is fantastic, especially outdoors. Here are some sample pictures of my mom’s puppy and a puffin, along with a picture of me taking pics at Giant’s Causeway to get a sense of the size of the lens. I’m just an amateur photographer, but I’m pretty proud of what I can do with this lens! Update: it’s been a couple years, and I LOVE THIS LENS! It’s my go to lens for literally everything. It’s perfect for birding, I used it to take Christmas card photos for my mom and a friend at work, and took pictures of sports games for our school yearbook that came out crystal clear. If you’re on the fence about it, just buy it. Worth every penny.

Excellent addition, beware of dust
+ Awesome range versatility. I'd go so far as to say this should be the second lens that any beginner should purchase to explore the range of focal lengths, using the 18-55mm as one and this 70-300mm as the other. + The combination of AF-P (Auto-Focus Pulse Motor) and Vibration Reduction (VR) is huge. The other Nikon DX lenses in this category do not have both. The 55-300mm uses AF-S (Auto-Focus SilentWave Motor) which is slower auto-focus and the older 70-300mm does not include VR. Do not bother with either of these alternatives unless your camera is not compatible with AF-P. Stick with this one. The 18-300mm lenses are also not as good as this one. The cost of convenience is a sharper, better photo. + Lightweight. It's basically effortless to wield this or wear it. - Low light performance is meh, but you kinda already knew that if you're running a max aperture of f/6.3 at 300mm. - DUST. If you buy this used or refurbished, be aware of the possibility of dust in the lens. At 300mm any huge pieces or huge amounts of dust will be a pain. I cycled through 3 different used purchases before finding one that that only had a small bit of dust. I am very satisfied with the performance of this lens.

Lens arrived quickly and in excellent condition.
Lens was shipped out 1 day faster than expected and was delivered the next day. Packaging is a cardboard box with paper filling and with bubble wrap around the lens. Lens works great and as expected.

Delivered Exactly What I Wanted
I had been looking for a telephoto lens for my Nikon that was longer than the current 70-200 mm that I have now. I received an e-mail for a sale on the non-VR (Vibration Reduction image stabilization) version of this lens. I like the VR feature, which sealed my decision to purchase this VR version of the lens. You do need to check the compatibility to see if this lens will work with your camera. The VR feature is turned on and off based upon a setting as the external switch on the lens itself not is there. Your camera may need a firmware update. Mine did. I found the update and how to install it on the Nikon website. It was a very simple process that was completed in a few minutes. What I purchased was not a kit, so there was not any lens hood or pouch in which to carry the lens. Additionally, the filter thread size is 58mm, so I did need to purchase a circular polarizing filter to protect the lens and because I like the filter’s effect on my pictures. Lastly, on the page for this lens under the Product Information sections under the Batteries sections, the following appears, “1 Lithium ion batteries [sic] required.” I did not notice this until I was writing this review. I did not install any battery, and the lens has been working. I could not find any reference to a battery in the manual. On searching other listings for this lens, I found a reference to the battery being required in the cached pages but not on the current pages. The battery was specified was the battery used in the camera. I believe that this is a typographical error that has been caught on the other pages but not this one yet. If I am wrong, please, someone tell me where it is in the lens and what the battery designation is. Overall, the lens operates exactly as expected. I am quite happy with it. I recommend it to all. I rate it with 5 stars.

An absolute optical gem at a bargain price
AF Accuracy, Speed Image Optics, Bokeh Quality, all stunning for a lens of this price range. Really impressed, especially over the 55-300 VR which is a dog compared to this glass. I love the form factor of this lens and the weight as well. Using this with a D7200 and D7100 IR converted camera and getting stunning results even wide open at 300mm. The AF is fast so it works wonders for panning shots using AF-C. Seriously love this lens the more I use it. One thing to note is that there is no VR switch. Heck there are no switches at all and most of it is made of plastic, but it is extremely lightweight and handles really well. The focus ring on the front is buttery smooth compared to the junk on the 55-300 VR. If you have a DX body, this is a lens to have, no joke.

Buen lente
Es el lente de kit, aún así es muy buena opción para empezar si no tienes un telefoto, es barato y tiene una calidad de imagen aceptable, además viene con estabilización VR lo cual se agradece.

Understated and underrated - best value lens ever.
First off, a big accolade to Amazon. I received this lens in the original packaging and clearly in its original packaged state, meaning no sign whatsoever of any tampering. Even the delivery was excellent and without any signs of mishandling or neglect and with items as delicate as this, just how it should be. The only downside was on delivery, the doorbell rang once and on opening the door, I found the parcel at my front door with the delivery person already in her vehicle and well on her way. Not good as in my onion this item should have signed for. And I was left wondering, if the parcel was stolen from my front door, who would pick up the tab in this instance? This lens is incredibly fast on autofocus and focusing is almost instant, and accurate. Nikon have done well here with this lens as even with the non-metal lens mount, the fit to the camera is perfect with superb build quality all round. The 70-300mm zoom is more than most of us would need and the lens is compact, light, and easily transported so ideal for travel. Image quality is very good and sharp. Turns out that this is one of my best acquisitions I have made in a while. Highly recommended.

Perfect DX Telephoto
I'm just starting to get into photography as a hobby and found this lens to be the perfect option to add a quality telephoto to my lens collection at an affordable price. I've been using this lens fairly regularly for almost two months and I love it. It's been to the zoo, a wolf sanctuary and on multiple hikes in the woods (so far). Some photos are attached (note, though taken with this lens, these have also been modified in Lightroom...mostly for colour and contrast). Overall: * VR allows me to take crisp shots handheld at 300mm (and some decent 70mm shots in lower than optimal lighting) * Autofocus/zoom is incredibly fast and relatively quiet * The lens is light compared to others with this range If you need a hood I recommend the JJC LH-77 Dedicated Lens Hood for Nikon AF-P DX NIKKOR 70-300mm f/4.5-6.3G ED VR, Nikon AF-P DX NIKKOR 70-300mm f/4.5-6.3G ED Lens, Replaces Nikon HB-77 Lens Hood . I bought it when the HB-77 was out of stock and my experience has been great.
