ATS Acoustics Sound Absorbing Acoustic Panel 24" x 48" x 4" Beveled Edge (Natural)

I bought my first ATS panels many, many years ago. By way of full disclosure, note that I have designed and helped build recording studio's for friends, since the 70's, and have had a side hustle of sorts designing high performance speakers over a wide cost range for the last 3 decades. Sadly, room acoustics and behavior are one of the most commonly ignored factors in a home sound system, yet one of the most modestly priced in comparison to the returns gained. This particular set was bought for a specific task, the development and testing of a theater grade center channel system for a home front projection client. But while this "client" will use some in the recommended positioning for the CC, it's even more important that he add more of them to reduce high level side wall reflections on his mains speakers and the resulting comb filtering effects at the listening positions. It's all about the physics, folks, and I use a calibrated measurement system with specialized software to evaluate before and after. (Earthworks M30 + Motu M4 interface, with RØDETest acoustics software). I don't like the hanging hardware on these newer versions of ATS panels as much as on my old ones, but it gets the job done, and comes with paper templates for marking the wall positions. You need to be a bit "handy" to install- if you can hang a storage cabinet in your laundry room, these will be a breeze. with the off white fabric, the esthetic impact is minimal in any negative sense- I don't like looking at open cell foam panels on the wall. Some people think that's OK and cool and "techy", but it doesn't work for me. The absorbency of the ATS panels is also better over foam, in my experience, over a wider frequency range.

I have been tinkering with my 2-channel stereo system for about 15 months since getting into this hobby. During that time, I upgraded equipment, cables, and other components. The sound always improved a little, with some bigger improvements along the way. But nothing — and I mean nothing — made the kind of difference these acoustic panels did. My listening room is rectangular, with the system placed along the long wall. There is a recess in the wall behind my left speaker that is about 21" deeper than the wall behind my right speaker. So the right speaker sits closer to the wall. I purchased a single 24" x 48" panel for the right side first. Immediately after installing it, the right side became noticeably stronger, clearer, and more focused than the left. That made it obvious the room itself was affecting the sound more than I realized. I ordered a second panel for the left side, and once both were installed, everything snapped into place. I had read on stereo forums for years about room treatment and how big of a difference it can make, but I honestly wrote that off as something minor. Now that I have these panels installed, I wish I would have done this much earlier. The improvement in sound from these panels has been more significant than any component or expensive cable I have added to my system. What changed most: Much more consistent soundstage Clearer vocals and instruments Better balance between left and right speakers Tighter, more controlled bass Overall sound that feels more natural and effortless For the cost of a couple panels, I finally achieved the kind of clarity and balance I had been chasing with gear upgrades. Mounting Tip — Easy Way to Create an Air Gap One thing that helped performance even more was creating an air gap behind the panels. Here’s exactly what I did: Cut blocks from a standard 2x4, about 4" wide Attached the included hangers to the back of the blocks Made sure the top ridge where the panel sits was just above the top of the block Drilled holes through the blocks using the included template pattern Used longer screws to mount the blocks and hangers into the wall This created a gap behind the panel and worked perfectly. Final Thought I was seriously considering spending a lot of money on a speaker upgrade before trying these panels. Now I don’t need to — at least not anytime soon. If you’re wondering whether acoustic panels really make a difference, especially in a typical living room, the answer from my experience is absolutely yes. This is one of the most cost-effective improvements you can make to your sound system. I hope this review helps someone who is where I was — curious, skeptical, and trying to decide if room treatment is worth it. It is.

Work great but a single panel is not enough to soundproof a small room, multiple are needed. Also the fabric stitching is good but not great. I think they will last for a while just based on their nature. They look nice.

Way way way nicer than I was expecting! Solid and well constructed. And they make a noticeable difference in stabilizing vocals and adding layered depth.

After hanging up the "bass traps" and running my receivers calibration program (MCACC) the receivers' numbers changed a bit. However my receiver noticed more of a difference than I did. These are my first "bass traps" so im not sure what kind of effects im supposed to get. I'll have to do more research to get a better idea of what to look for in bass trap performance because right now I can't really tell. UPDATE: 5-2-12 After resareching the subject of "Bass Traps" to death, I have found many things in common required to make effective bass traps, and these acoustic panels have almost none of them, so im currently in the process of building my own traps. This should be good!!!

I purchased 18 24 x 48 x 4-inch acoustic panels in Ivory, and my studio is dead silent. I am highly impressed by the quality, considering the great price, fast shipping, and excellent packaging. I highly recommend it.

One of the best things you can do to a home theater or music room is to hang acoustic panels such as these. Acoustic panels like these quiet the reflections that color the room's sound. Size matters and these are the thicker 4" deep traps that absorb a wider frequency range than the more common 2" thick panels. When treating a room try to treat the areas where sound would reflect from the speakers, off a wall, ceiling, or floor and then into the listeners ears first. Then you can address other reflections like those off the back walls. I bought a pair of these 4" thick traps to hang in the back of a dedicate music room. Up front by the speakers I have pretty panels with art printed on them that cost several times the price of these. These are great value panels as the quality of the fit-and-finish looks great installed. The panels include "French cleats", metal Z clips that mount to the panel and wall. Screws were included.
