Illuminated Letters Sketchbook (Interactive Journal, Notebook)

I am using this for basic ideas for illuminating my journal and notebook pages. I do like the spaces to practice some of the examples. I am a novice at this and find this book very helpful.

Technique is not really discussed in the kind of detail that I find useful. It's more like "here is a shape - copy it." I went to art school so I recognize that some imitation is required as one is learning new skills, but I couldn't latch on to the conceptual side of it because the book, for me, is so dry and basic.The worst part though is that the drawings aren't printed in even alignment with the graph paper grid background, making it hard to actually use this feature for its intended purpose.Overall for me the execution is lacking with this one as I try to learn this technique, but I'll keep and revisit it after learning some more fundamental illumination and calligraphy skills. I do think it will be helpful for teaching some fun concepts at that stage.

I bought this book for a 12 year old boy and an 8 year old girl. I already had a copy and loved it. Seems the book appealed to the kids, too. They both came up with the most creative twists making their own illuminated letters and used their new found art to decorate the letters they sent to me!

Use this to practice drawing the letters. It does not provide a lot of instruction but gives plenty of examples to copy and ideas about creating your own letters. I found it very helpful for drawing practice, spacing (the whole book is graph paper) and color selection. It provides many different styles as well.

I was disappointed in this book. Each letter was shown in a diagram. But it did not show all of the letters in the same design. I wanted, and expected that I could fine directions for all of the letters. It just didn’t do what I wanted and expected.

I bought 3 more of these - one for myself, the others for gifts - after seeing the one I bought my granddaughter in England. They're great - plenty of detail on "how to", with scope for one's own creativity.

I'm not an artist, but I love creating beautiful things. This little book is constructed nicely, and is a great size to 'take along.' The instructions and diagrams are simple to follow. And - it's fun! I'd buy it again, for sure!

I've done a couple of short calligraphy courses & am enjoying creating things for friends & family. This book has proved a fantastic resource & I've been able to transfer designs onto different letters than those illustrated easily to the clear step by step instructions & practice space provided.

Love this book. The variety of designs and layouts are interesting and inspiring. Wholeheartedly recommend. Lovely to gift and lovely to have/receive too! Also like the quality and feel of the book. Very pleased. Thank you!

Nice pretty book to own as a sketch book / journal but I do not think it has enough instructions to copy the examples. If you're buying it to learn illumination techniques you might be a bit disappointed.

Really liked this book. There are lots of graph paper for practice. Bought this for myself but ended up buying one each for my two adult children, and as a Christmas gift for a friend who raved about it.
