Essential for a wood burner with a stainless steel flue
This product was recommended to me by our chimney sweep and his recommendation confirmed by our local fire shop. For those individuals who know anything about wood burners and chimneys there are a couple of things that we know to adhere to, quality and condition of the wood and fire temperature. We use dry hard wood logs, with a small amount of house coal to fuel our burner, I was advised to switch over to smokeless fuel to supplement the logs on the advice of our fire service as we live in a thatched cottage, however a reader advised me that smokeless fuel is not recommended for stainless steel liners and so I am back to using house coal (update December 2014).Allowing for the fact that I feel we are fairly proficient in our use of a log burner and that we ensure that we use the correct materials at the right temperature, there is evidence in both our burner and chimney that some tar and deposits do accumulate. This is partly to do with the type of burner (Dovre 2000) and the prevailing wind that we experience in an area know as a pressure zone.We have used Hotspot for many years now as an adjunct to good practice and I know that it is working by the rate and type of deposit that accumulate on the plate at the base of the chimney. I use one scoop twice per week, against the advice of the manufacturer who recommends two scoops, as I feel that our fire is operated well and we burn wood at about the right temperature. I am confident that this is the right amount and rate for us, based upon the physical examination carried out by our chimney sweep annually, who always comments that it is nice to view a well looked after chimney. Regular use is crucial, as although you can use a greater amount to "shock" deposits off the liner, small and often is better. One word of caution is that not all products are suitable for stainless steel chimney liners, but this one is and therefore is recommended. There may also be some readers who question whether you need to have your chimney swept at all if you are burning your fire correctly: in that regard I would err towards caution, particularly if like me, you live in a thatched cottage and would be in breach of the terms necessary to secure house insurance.UPDATE=======Just taken delivery of a further two tubs of this product ready for the winter of 2015/16. It does work and has keep my chimney in good condition. I would reiterate that I always stock up with dry logs and ensure that my fire is operating at a temperature sufficiently hot and well ventilated to reduce the amount of deposits which stick to the liner wall. A combination of good practice, a quantity of house coal and this excellent product.2016=====More purchased. Still have a tar free chimney.

Effective help for chimney sweeping
I've used this product for years and found it very effective. Without it the chimney sweeping brush just slides over the smooth creosote deposit. This powder cracks it up so the brush actually removes it from the flue.Another tip from my chimney sweep was to burn a few lumps of Burnwell smokeless fuel in with the wood. This increases the temperature of the flue gasses and reduces deposits. I did have to add a flat fire grate resting on small fire bricks to my woodburner to protect the base from the hotter combustion. This improved it still further.

Looking goid
Recommended twice a week. I’ve only had it a week so have only used it trice so far. My chimney sweep recommended it as previous owners seem to have burnt all sorts and it’s produced lots of tar. I have high hopes for this, might edit in a month or so. Looking good so far!

I really am unsure
So far I'm not sure to be honest. It was recommended by my chimney sweep in February. He said there were small patches of tar up there -nothing serious, but that the powder twice a week would help, and to book a new sweeping for a few months' time. I never burn green wood but maybe don't have a hot enough fire or something, because after using the powder regularly, and buying 2 tubs, when the sweep came today he said it was so tarred-up up there that he can't clear it, and it will now be dangerous to light a fire at all. He recommends I speak to an "Installer" pesumably to discuss major chimney refurbishment....(all I need). I have no central heating anyway but unfortunately can't light the fire either until I spend....what? £1500? I have used that chimney happily since 1984 with no issues!I'm not exactly blaming the powder. There might be some other reason things have got so bad. But what I can't understand is why the powder didn't clear those "small patches of tar" which remained after cleaning since February, and why the whole thing is 500% worse! I really thought it was going to destroy that little bit of gunk -not that things would get much worse.

What a good idea. I learned so much by reading previous reviews such as using seasoned wood etc. obvious to some perhaps, but I just piled it on without thinking too much about it. I know cleaning logs work, now to give this a try. Less bulky to store than logs and if a teaspoon to the fire now and again does the trick, it should work out much cheaper. The good reviews this got led me to purchase, so I think that these reviews are well worth the time put into them.

Quick delivery.
The initial instructions on the tub, are a bit vague. There needs to be more information. Perhaps with a detailed leaflet in a sealed back, actually in the tub. (Just an idea).. But I've used it twice in a week and then the weather turned. So i clean my Narrowboat Chimney stack to fully check it out. Ask me again..

A useful product
I have a small wood burning stove which tended to get a tar build up. This melted and ran down causing the lower door seal to stick and pulling the rope out of its slot. Hotspot makes the tar harden and prevents the problem. I am not sure I would call it a chimney cleaner but our sweep tells me the hardened tar comes away well when the chimney is swept. So I am quite happy with the product.
