Is it necessary to add butter/oil? Or can you make it without it?

It is good as it is prepared. I like to melt butter and drizzle it on for theatre style popcorn. Grandkids call it Pa's special popcorn and ask for it on visits.

Is the salt separate ?

Yes, we tried a batch with less than the full pack of Seasoned Salt. It still tasted good

Can you use this in a large pan with lid on stove?

Yes. No different than in an automatic popper. HOWEVER, It is a ridiculously expensive way to make popcorn, when you can buy bags of popcorn at a fraction, as well as flavored oils that do the same thing. And it does not make the amount of popcorn (per each packet) that they claim. After we bought a 24 pack case, we only popped about 4 packets and decided it was not worth it, as far as yield and flavor....pretty salty. I much prefer popping white popcorn (much crisper than yellow), in a pan on the stove with a lid, using Canola oil or Grapeseed oil, and then finishing it off with melted real butter along with my choice of the amount of salt to sprinkle. We ended up giving away or case to a family member.
