Why is there a lead warning on this product?

California has determined that any product which results in the consumer being exposed to greater than 0.5 micrograms of lead per daily dose requires a warning statement. The level is not based on a particular health concern, but is calculated as a 1,000-fold safety factor below the highest level found to have no observable reproductive effect. This level is particularly strict, and far below the levels determined by other governmental agencies. Lead is naturally present throughout the world in soil, plants and water. For example, a serving of shrimp can contain as much as 23 mcg of lead. Fruits and vegetables commonly contain levels in excess of 0.5 mcg per serving. Dietary supplements can also contain small amounts of naturally occurring lead, and with higher dosing levels these products can exceed the levels set forth under California law.
