Are the blades wood or plastic?

They are wood and have two different colors on each side. I love this little fan. I have it in a 12x12 room.

Can you use a wall switch to control the fan speed and dim the light?

Fan speed must be controlled by the pull chain switch, unless you install a remote control module. Light switch should only control power on and power off unless you dedicate a switch for each, light and fan. If you do install a remote, you may be able to get one to control both, but if you can find one it will be pretty expensive. If you want those kinds of options you’ll have to pay up and get a better fan... you expect a LOT for the price Dude

The fan pull chain seems to rub and not pull cleanly like the light pull chain. Is there a remote I can order instead of using the pull chains?

During assembly there is a ring that I missed installing and the chain would rub. Luckily, I found it and installed it. I also purchased and installed "Hunter Fan Company Hunter 99123 Transitional Remote Control " . Works just fine! FYI, if your fan is already installed, it will need to be taken down since the transmit/receiver part of the remote should be installed inside.
