Seemingly flawless medical student Philip Markoff leads a double life and starts to descend into a twisted world of gambling, crime, battery and eventually murder, all while meeting his victims through Craigslist.

Good movie. Hopefully has people watching closely what’s going on around them when using Craigslist or similar sites. Very Sad.

A Wasted Life
This kind of movie is always tough to watch. You not only have innocent victims of pointless crimes, but you also have collateral damage of people who know the killer. Add on top of that the killer himself -- a guy who seemingly has the world at his fingertips as a future doctor with almost unlimited earning potential -- who spirals downwards and destroys himself. I mean, is there anyone here who we can root for who doesn't seem to have his or her life completely destroyed? But still, even though I've seen documentaries on Philip Markoff and STILL wanted to see "The Craigslist Killer" (TCK), I also had a hard time deciding whether to buy the streaming version or the DVD version. It's odd, but the latter is about half the price, and so even though I far prefer streaming -- I can watch it anywhere, anytime, and anyplace -- money won out here for me. Kind of like Mr. Markoff at the blackjack table, or in a hotel room with a defenseless victim. This film mostly succeeds, I think mainly due to Jake McDorman, who plays Mr. Markoff very well. Naturally, I didn't know the real-life killer, but I believe that Mr. McDorman gets most of the characterization right. The actor plays the character in kind of a schizophrenic way, bouncing back and forth between cocky and sure of himself -- maybe even full of himself -- to having moments of doubt that sometimes devolve into true despair. To me, that is most likely the way that Mr. Markoff was in real life, because, once again, he seemed to have everything going for him but he also knew himself that he was throwiing it all away. The rest of the cast is surely at least competent. Agnes Bruckner is also very good, and she is certainly also very good looking, which never hurts. Where I think this movie somewhat failed for me though: the tone. There are many scenes that are surely ominous, but the background music that is selected is upbeat and "happy happy." Perhaps the director wanted to be ironic? I'm not sure, but I think if I had chosen a score for this film, it surely would have been a bit darker. While I surely wasn't an expert on this true-crime story, I still knew quite a bit, and I probably give nothing away when I write the following (MINOR SPOILER ALERT): Mr. Markoff kills himself in his jail cell at the end. (END MINOR SPOILER ALERT.) But no matter. A sign that a film, based upon a true story, is doing a good job: if you know what's coming but you're still sitting at the edge of your seat, and that was mainly how I was while watching. So I think that TCK does a good job in that regard. But whether or not you know much about the real-life Philip Markoff and this story, I'll go with a little bit more than a minor recommendation on "The Craigslist Killer." While it's surely not a killer film, it is pretty good, especially for a made-for-TV affair.

Great movie based on a true story
Great movie based on a true story. This is another wonderful movie that reminds you of real life events and things people should learn from. Always better to spend that extra money on some licensed help than it is to keep feeding the addiction if you won't admit your problem to your own peers. The more an addiction is fed the worse it always gets from money in the hole with no success out of it to even more problems just like this, he had everything and he chose the secret of the addiction life to take it all down the drain.
