How is this different from nail file for humans?

It files more of the nail per stroke because of the grade of roughness, like the difference between fine sandpaper vs. coarse. For dog nails it's perfect, though it does take time. I clip my dogs' nails and then file down the sharp edges with this. Dogs tolerate it and it works well.

Would this file work on a Labrador Retriever? (I noticed one of the reviews mentioned a small dog)

It should work fine. I have a medium large Shepard mix and it worked fine for him as long as your dog is willing.

Could I use this file in place of nail clippers on our Borzoi (Russian Wolfhounds)? Thank you

Hi Fran, your dog will be much happier if you used the nail clippers as it takes quit a while to file on those nails.Be sure and get the large size Safari Professional Nail clippers for this dog.

I owned cockatoos and also was a manicurist, so I simply used the human nail files, the basic black two-sided coarseness. My cockatoo would perch on his jungle gym and he allowed me to file his claws without having to wrap him in a towel. I think he found it curious and therefore trusted me. My African Grey was another story. Him I would have to wrap in a towel and expose his claws so that he wasn't aware. I would file their claws frequently and that way I completely avoided needing to actually trim them.
