It is a book for mental health professionals but not for ADHDers or their loved ones.
I expected more from the book since the author is one of the psychiatrist with more expertise on ADHD. But I got disappointed. This book is wrong in the tittle. It is a book that does not provide any advice on how to deal with the daily struggles for both the person who has ADHD and the one or ones who care about him/her. The content is a bunch of information and a generalisation of ADHD; it does not mention anything about exceptions or so. Not all ADHD people are like most of people with no idea about it think (and the book seems to uphold ); namely, the stereotype of a "disorganised, messy, bad student and/or problematic person". Especially regarding ADHD in women, this is not how ADHD affects them. So, if you like to have a first overview about ADHD and medical treatment, the book is ok. But if you want to help yourself as ADHD person, or you love one with ADHD and you would like an advice about how to do better together, do not spend money buying this book.

Confirmation of what I already Knew
I have been struggling with my son's ADHD for years. He not only has ADHD but ODD, BPD, anxiety and depression. At first I believed he was a juvenile delinquent, antisocial. As he grew older I noticed he was very intelligent but dumb at the same time. He is now 37 but still has child like qualities, parts of him still behave like a teenager. After reading this book it was like someone turned on the lights. I didn't just think he had a problem I knew. This book could have been written by me. The sad thing is the doctors in the UK are not willing to believe he has a problem and are adamant that his "condition" is not treatable and just a personality.......... This book has given me the stength and ammunition I needed to go all out and make them understand.

amazing info
A great book that explains how difficult life is for ADHD people. It is easy to read and is full of facts about this problem that many people have, through no fault of their own. I highly recommend it....remember..."it is not their fault".

Honest, practical, and very real
This book was a bit of a relief to read. Russell Barkley doesn’t romanticize ADHD or turn it into a “superpower.” He shows what it actually looks like in real life – messy finances, relationship struggles, impulsivity, exhaustion, and that constant feeling that a person could do more but somehow can’t hold things together. What I really appreciated is how clearly he explains that ADHD is not about laziness. It’s about self‑regulation. And that changes how you see both the person and the situation. The book is written for partners, parents, and anyone close to someone with ADHD. It’s practical, grounded, and sometimes uncomfortable – but very helpful. My main takeaway: people with ADHD don’t need more pressure to “try harder.” They need structure, support, and understanding. If you want a realistic perspective on ADHD, this is a very good place to start.
