Review: Imformative Book with Plenty of Good Recipes - This book, Cholesterol Lowering Cookbooks: Superfoods and Dairy Free for a Low Cholesterol Diet, was written by Kelly Marcil. The book begins with a table of contents, which does not contain page numbers on which one can locate the beginning of each chapter; however, on the Kindle version of the book, each section and specific recipe is written in a hyperlink fashion. This is done to enable the user to simply click the portion they are interested in prior to being automatically directed to the first page of that section or recipe. I consider the hyperlinks to be a nice, easy method to flip to a certain area in this book. Following a short introduction for the overall diet plan, there is a second introduction pertaining to the first section of the book, superfoods. This section is separated in terms of recipes related to a specific superfood. The recipes for this diet plan are written to include the following information: short introduction (for the broad superfood), title, serving size, ingredient list, specific ingredient measurements, and instructions. There are 7 salmon recipes, 7 spinach recipes, 6 quinoa recipes, 7 bean and lentil recipes, 7 apple recipes, 10 yogurt recipes, 8 sweet potato recipes, 5 kiwi recipes, 5 blueberry recipes, 2 dark chocolate recipes, 1 oat recipe, and 4 pumpkin recipes. The section ends with a short conclusion prior to the start of the second section of the book, revolving around a dairy free diet. This section starts with a short introduction, information as to the benefits of the diet plan, how to cope with transitioning to a dairy free diet plan, and a sample 5 day diet plan. The recipes contain the same information as mentioned in the superfoods section of the book. In the dairy free diet plan recipe selection, there are 14 breakfast recipes, 29 lunch/dinner recipes, and 10 snack/dessert recipes. The dairy free section ends with a short conclusion. I enjoyed the lack of filler information in this book, the lack of grammatical or spelling errors, and the taste of the recipes I have tried. I normally remove a star from my overall rating due to awkward formatting of a book, such as indentation errors, lack of recipes starting on new pages, inability to easily distinguish a recipe title from its ingredients/directions, etcetera. This always detracts from my reading experience. However, the only formatting issues that caught my eye was the lack of beginning the first recipe on a new page from the chapter title and the lack of a similar format transitioning from the first section of the book to the second section. In addition, I would have preferred the table of contents to be formatted for easier differentiation of the sections from the specific recipes (for example: a specific salmon recipe is not indented or italicized to display an overt difference from the “salmon” section head). I will admit that a significant amount of the recipes are recipes I have not made or thought to make prior to the reading of this book. The recipes do not, for the most part, seem overly difficult/time consuming to make and do not require an overwhelming amount of specialty ingredients. A small downside to this book, for me, is that there is no nutritional information and no pictures. In addition, I would have liked to see more superfoods recipes per section (only one oat recipe means to me it should have just been excluded and had another superfood with more recipes added in its place). Overall, this book contains fairly easy recipes with easy to follow directions and a lack of filler information. I would recommend this book to those interested in tasty cholesterol lowering recipes.

Great book for cooking to lower cholesterol
What is Cholesterol?: Cholesterol is a waxy, fat-like substance found in the walls of cells in all parts of the body, from the nervous system to the liver to the heart. The body uses cholesterol to make hormones, bile acids, vitamin D, and other substances. The body makes all the cholesterol it needs. Cholesterol circulates in the bloodstream but cannot travel by itself. As with oil and water, cholesterol (which is fatty) and blood (which is watery) do not mix. So cholesterol travels in packages called lipoproteins, which have fat (lipid) inside and protein outside. Two main kinds of lipoproteins carry cholesterol in the blood: ■ Low density lipoprotein, or LDL, which also is called the “bad” cholesterol because it carries cholesterol to tissues, including the arteries. Most of the cholesterol in the blood is the LDL form. The higher the level of LDL cholesterol in the blood, the greater your risk for heart disease. ■ High density lipoprotein, or HDL, which also is called the “good” cholesterol because it takes cholesterol from tissues to the liver, which removes it from the body. A low level of HDL cholesterol increases your risk for heart disease. If there is too much cholesterol in the blood, some of the excess can become trapped in artery walls. Over time, this builds up and is called plaque. The plaque can narrow vessels and make them less flexible, a condition called atherosclerosis or “hardening of the arteries.” This process can happen to blood vessels anywhere in the body, including those of the heart, which are called the coronary arteries. If the coronary arteries become partly blocked by plaque, then the blood may not be able to bring enough oxygen and nutrients to the heart muscle. This can cause chest pain, or angina. Some cholesYour Guide to Lowering Your Cholesterol With Therapeutic Lifestyle Changes terol-rich plaques are unstable—they have a thin covering and can burst, releasing cholesterol and fat into the bloodstream. The release can cause a blood clot to form over the plaque, blocking blood flow through the artery—and causing a heart attack. When atherosclerosis affects the coronary arteries, the condition is called coronary heart disease or coronary artery disease. It is the main type of heart disease and this booklet will refer to it simply as heart disease. Because high blood cholesterol affects the coronary arteries, it is a major risk factor for heart disease. Risk factors are causes and conditions that increase your chance of developing a disease. Other major heart disease risk factors are given in Box 1. Why this Book: I highly recommend this book for getting fundamental ways to lower cholesterol through your diet. I recieved this product at a discount for my honest and unbiased opinion.

Good cookbook, but not for lowering cholesterol
The beginning of this book discusses the benefits of altering a personal diet. It talks about lower cholesterol, lactose intolerance, "superfoods", etc. It's useful information for those who don't know, but I usually find them off-putting because of the heavy-handedness and/or shaming. The author managed to be informative without overbearing, thankfully. It's also good for brushing up on remembering what kinds of foods to focus on eating. I mention that because the "super foods" are specific to those usually linked with lowering cholesterol, not an exhaustive list. Each specific food introduces sections with that item as a main ingredient. Unfortunately, this book isn't very good for someone who has a cholesterol problem and is trying to keep it into control or actually lower it. It's more suitable to someone who might just want to watch what they're eating, like lowering your cholesterol because you're preparing the food instead of getting pre-packaged or fast food. It's quite misleading, in my opinion. This book pretty much goes against the basics of lowering cholesterol: lower sodium intake, lowering fats, cut mayo, cut pasta, cut white potatoes, and avoid pre-packaged things* (high salt content, usually as a preservative). *I’ll admit this could be me reading into things, but instead of instructing one to stew or run food through a processor it reads like using the canned items. Same with a couple of other things, they’ll small daily changes that can have a large impact. I thought it was weird some healthier alternatives weren't used in place of certain ingredients. I was going to shrug it off until I remembered this book contained some pretty unique items and artisan spices are listed. If items found in specialty stores can be included, I don’t see why alternatives found in regular grocery stores wouldn’t be. Anyway, it wasn’t all bad. While I didn’t feel comfortable in partaking in some of these dishes, I did prepare them for my family. Most were well-received. I also did like the inclusion of items not commonly used. I remember one item in particular, harissa, was thoroughly described. It told you where you could most likely find the item. Along with posing a way to make a similar item yourself. The biggest hits so far with the family: Coconut crusted salmon, Brown rice with fruit and nuts My faves: Vegetarian Chili, Cuban Black Beans, Apple Chutney This book also includes some more well-known dishes like apple turnovers, crepes, apple crisp, smoothies, pumpkin pie, mac ‘n’ cheese, chicken and dumplings, etc. The recipes are quite varied. There’s still a number of dishes that I’d like to try. I feel a bit conflicted about this book. It’s clearly a quality piece of work. However, it’s misleading. It doesn’t accomplish what the title or description states and a good portion of these recipes look like they’d need to be altered to truly fit a low cholesterol diet. And if I had purchased the physical copy as opposed to the digital I would have been pretty mad this is what I received. (Thank goodness for digital copies sometimes lol)

Great collection of easy and tasty recipes
My husband was recently diagnosed with high cholesterol, and I've been looking for recipes for good foods that we'll both enjoy. I'm not a huge vegetable or fish fan, but this book had ways to prepare fish and vegetables that are pretty palatable to me (a chicken and sweet potatoes kind of person), and my husband really liked the dishes I've prepared since downloading this e-book. I like how the author goes into detail about why certain foods like diary can inflame or aggravate health issues, and why it's important to avoid them as much as possible for those with high cholesterol. And I like how she describes the benefits of superfoods like spinach, salmon, and others. There are main dish recipes as well as side dishes and smoothies. Could I have found many of these types of recipes on Pinterest or online? Of course, but I like having a nice collection of them bundled together in a handy e-book that I can access even if I'm not online or have crappy signal while I'm inside the grocery store with a thick, metal roof. This cookbook not only has a ton of recipes for all ages and tastes, it also includes why or why not to eat certain foods. Many of these recipes are variants of more elaborate ones I've found online, but with simple, and easy-to-find ingredients that don't require a trip to specialty markets every time you turn around. I received this product at a discount in exchange for my honest and unbiased review.

Dairy FREE - what a Joke!!!
This book is full of receipes with milk, cream cheese, yogurt, whipping cream, and cheese!! Do not buy this book if you can not have dairy. Book should be pulled from shelves. Total miss representation!!! These recipes do not look like they would ever lower cholesterol.

Great low-cholesterol recipes!
I LOVE this cookbook. I have had high cholesterol since I was a child, and it runs in my family. Most low-cholesterol cookbooks have boring recipes that are just not that exciting. I love how this one explains how cholesterol-lowering foods work, and then groups the recipes by the foods: a bunch of salmon recipes, a bunch of spinach recipes, etc. The recipes are unusual – I cook a lot and have never seen any of these in other low-cholesterol or other cookbooks – and yet the ingredients are for the most part things you’d find in your pantry already. Here and there are some unusual items, but nothing that you probably couldn’t find in your local grocery store. There are even a few dessert recipes scattered throughout the book, as well as an entire section about dark chocolate – how can you go wrong with that? The second half of the book is all about taking dairy out of your diet, along with a meal plan and recipes. The recipes look good there, too, but my main focus was on the low-cholesterol side. I’d definitely recommend this book. Please note: I received this product at a discounted rate (or for free) in exchange for an honest review; however, that does NOT influence my opinion of this or any other product I review. I participate in these programs so that I can try things I may not otherwise be able to, as well as to help other shoppers make an informed decision. Please check out my other reviews to find criticism and praise where warranted. I hope this has been helpful.

Fun cookbook
This is a creative cookbook. It is arranged in two sections, first are recipes based on specific “superfoods” (foods high in antioxidant qualities) and the second part provides recipes and tips for eating a dairy-free diet. Recipes in the first part include healthy, delicious recipes such as sweet coconut crusted salmon, spinach, lentil and bean curry, quinoa pilaf, apple soup, sweet and spicy sweet potatoes, sweet potato soup, fruit pizza, blueberry chicken, spicy dark chocolate cookies, pumpkin pasta, and many more yummy treats. There are a lot of recipes included here that I really am looking forward to trying! The recipes in the second part offer comforting substitutes for recipes one usually associates with milk products, but without the dairy, such as mac and cheese, squash soup, clam chowder, and buckwheat walnut muffins. As a bonus the second part offers menu ideas and suggestions for making a lactose free diet appealing to children. I would have given this book 5 stars because it excels as a cookbook with a wide variety of healthy, interesting recipes. I am giving it 4 stars instead because the title of the book is misleading as it really does not specifically address lowering cholesterol. At first I was disappointed since I am specifically looking for tips for lowering cholesterol. However, upon reflection, I can see that the book offers a lot of value with its very interesting assortment of healthy recipes! I am very grateful to have received the book in exchange for an honest review. In summary, if you are looking for specific information on lowering your high cholesterol in order to avoid taking statins, I would look elsewhere, but if you are looking for some creative recipes to enrich your already healthy lifestyle, I highly recommend this book!

Useful general healthy eating cookbook.
This book has a lot of information, and some good recipes, which I am looking forward to trying out . It does seem to try to cover everything; giving information on special diets, with which the connection to lowered cholesterol may be a little tenuous. However it is a very good all-round reference book for healthy eating. I received this as a kindle book for free in return for an honest review. I personally feel this is the kind of book I would prefer as a hard back book, as that makes browsing easier, especially while cooking.
