Have Cisco devices? This is the book
Just got this about two weeks ago and it is now my Cisco "bible" (well, one of them anyway! It will be dog-eared' by July! It clearly shows the command syntax *and* explains what's is going on and why. The author also explains why he feels certain things are best practices and things you probably shouldn't do! (And again, explains why) Its written with a bit of humor here and there, but does go in order from basic networking, through configuring various devices. (All Cisco of course, which is exactly what I needed) I have a BS in Network Engineering, so the early chapters are pretty much 101 level stuff, but its good refresher or info for newer folks to the industry. I myself wanted a simple reference specific to Cisco, which is what most of the rest of the book is. If I had one 'grumble' so to speak, it would be they is repetitive mentions of 'the minibook' But its a dummies book so maybe thats the style? Anyway, if your learning your way around basic Cisco, this would be a good book to have...

Cisco Networking All-in-One for Dummies: 6 books in 1 volume.
I have lost count of the number of '... for Dummies' books I have purchased over the years and I think this is number thirty-something. None of these books have proven to be poor value, quite the contrary, they are excellent books, well thought out and clearly written. They are even better value if purchased used, secondhand, nearly new or like new. This particular book concerns Cisco Networking and in my opinion Cisco itself publish the best books on this their own subject. This is not to say this 'All-in-One' book is greatly inferior. Its advantage is that it effectively embraces 6 books in 1 which has to be good value. Furthermore, much of this book's content is based upon tried-and-tested Cisco texts which are noted for their clarity and ability to explain complex subjects both simply and succinctly. In common with all '... for Dummies' books, the presentation style is aimed at American readers but also for English-speaking overseas markets. From what I have read, this book is intended for the beginner/intermediate reader seeking to learn or refresh their knowledge on what is a very complex technical subject. Advanced readers might like to consider Cisco's own publications which can be purchased for even less money. The '... for Dummies' book is littered with many dozens of illustrations and often pictures are used in place words to help illustrate a concept, frequently in a jokey-style, a hallmark of '... for Dummies' books. If I had to carry just one book with me concerning Cisco Networking, this would be it.
