My violin really didn't like us moving to Canada from Texas, and started whistling the E string like crazy. I'm working with a major Canadian orchestra now and really don't have any time to send the fiddle to its maker for a major check-up that it needs so badly. I've tried pretty much all of the non-whistling E's on the market, and this one is the winner, by a large margin! The Kaplan 311 is the ultimate answer to my emergency, it just works, and the tone is actually beautiful. It's somewhat subtle, I'd say about 25% less in volume than your regular unwound E's (which is a great thing in an orchestral setting!), but very silky and lush, and the articulation is as good as with a straight wire. The only down side to it is that they don't last, at all. Couple of months is the most that I can get out of it before the aluminum winding disintegrates, sometimes a month, depends on the mileage you put on it. Totally fine with me though: the whistling is gone and the tone is absolutely beautiful. The rest of my strings are Thomastik Pi, and the Kaplan is a perfect match for them, makes it really easy to blend in with the group. I'll just keep buying these until I can get my violin looked at, easiest solution to a tough problem. I'll take it.
