Impressive power to cut tall thick weeds
This review is based on first use with 1 &1/2 charges. . If I run into trouble and have to return it, I will update my experience. Battery life: about as expected and advertised. I trimmed f1/4 1 acre residential yard trimming heavy grass, including weeds with stalks up to 3/8" diameter& chain link fences in 1 1/2 charges. it has to run full throttle to cut the thick stuff, whereas my gas trimmer didn't. but then my gas trimmer blew up after maybe 25 uses and cost $200 and I got this one for $109 and can replace it without batteries for under $6o and it does the same job in the same time and is actually easier to use since it is lighter. Charges fast. Says 1 hour for this size battery, but maybe faster. . \Weight: unlike gas models this unit is heavy at the cutting end. The battery is extremely light weight even not comparative to it's size, but I'd still rather own two 2 AH batteries than one 4AH. The string seems to be nothing generic like you can buy in bulk and I think more durable. Operation: it is not overpowered like the gas ones, therefore I don't recommend the 20V single string model to anyone who is trimming anything in addition to regularly mowed grass such as thick stalk weeds like I needed to cut. And obviously even this 40V model is not suitable for commercial, every day use. . Regarding string feeding complaints in reviews: despite all the complaints and bad reviews here about this auto-feed design not feeding out, I had no problem with mine. I think the bad reviews based upon the supposed non feeding issue are due to the reviewers not reading the instructions. If they called support, i suspect the issue was resolved and they've all been too lazy or perhaps personally dishonest to change their reviews to reflect their mistakes. But if I am wrong and mine has an issue, I know I can depend upon Amazon and GteenWorks to resolve the issue for me. Feeding discussion continued: twice the string got short and i had to do what the instructions say, which is to pull the trigger for 2-5 seconds and then let off the trigger for 2-5 seconds before resuming work. one time when one string went up inside the spool, I had to take the spool out and refeed the line through the hole. Twice more I had to press the button in the side of the spool hub and manually pull out the strings on both sides. But most of the time it fed out automatically just as it says it does. And frankly, it works at least as well as my old bump feed one and if it stops auto feeding entirely, I would put up with having to stop once in a while and manually extracting the lines as described above, it works that good and costs so little comparative to rival products. . I also almost sent it back the same day, today. because I placed it on charge after I finished the yard and in about 5 minutes the green "done" light came on and would not go off even if I unplugged everything and plugged it back on, it went right to "done charging". intent on sending it back I disassembled it and threw it in the box and went online and requested a return. Amazon automatically created a new order to replace it at 0$ an said I had a month to return this one. So then I looked at the battery again, which I had left in the charger plugged in, and it was charging and the read "charging light was on. It finally took a full charge.supposedly if a hot pack is plugged into the charger, it says teh hot pack indicator light is supposed to be orange. Well I am assuming that that was the problem, a hot pack, but the orange light never came on, just the red and green ones. So I am assuming that there is a minor malfunction in the charger either once or permanent that didn't let it show the "hot pack" delay it was in before I packed it up. I greatfully unpacked and reassembled it because I don't like being suckered by garbage products for any amount of $. I'd rather be wrong and have to repack and unpack something than actually have to return it because it's phony garbage. The only pleasure I get out of that experience is when i'm smearing the truth all over Amazon about my bad experience with the product with almost vengeful zeal.

Almost Perfect
I've been slowly switching all my lawn tools over to the Greenworks 40V system, and this string trimmer was the latest addition after my old DeWalt died. For the most part, it's a fantastic tool. It's impressively lightweight and has very low vibration and a great size which makes it comfortable to use. The performance is great—it's fast and cuts through everything in my yard with ease. The battery run time is also more than enough to get the whole job done. The trigger mechanism takes a little getting used to, and it would be nice if it came with a shoulder strap, but those are minor points. The real reason I'm giving this 4 stars instead of 5 is a defect with the brand-new battery it came with. While the battery charges and powers the trimmer just fine, the charge indicator lights don't work at all. It's a bummer and a definite quality control issue to have a feature be dead on arrival. Overall, I'm very happy with the weed eater itself, but the faulty battery prevents a perfect score.

Seems to do the job after limited usage
I bought this trimmer because it was on sale and the battery is interchangeable with other tools I own. I'm not real sure what I think about the wire trimming elements compared to the plastic line on my other trimmers. I have not been able to verify that the line feed actually works as advertised nor have I been able to tell that the speed can vary. The edge guide seems pretty much worthless. So far I am pretty well satisfied, but I'm likely to revert to my 110V string trimmer for most of the yard even though the cord is a hassle.

Greenworks 40V 12" Cordless String Trimmer (two thumbs up)
Greetings. Last year I purchased a Ryobi 40v weed eater that costs north of $200. Despite being a Ryobi fan I was never satisfied with that machine. I was very disappointed and felt like I wasted my money. Last week I went online and researched the best, budget level, weed eaters for smaller yards to service. This particular model showed up on several lists. I was somewhat taken aback because of the price tag of a little over $100 which includes the charger and battery. Honestly, I was worried that this was a cheap product. I am happy to report that I am extremely satisfied with this Greenworks 40V 12" Cordless String Trimmer. I actually think this trimmer is more powerful than the Ryobi model which cost me twice as much. The automatic line feed works great. This is also bit more lightweight than my previous weed eater. The unit is very easy to assemble in just a couple of minutes. I also love the fact that you can edge with this model. It has a small metal bar that you can flip forward and then rotate how you hold the trimmer and you now have a very capable edger. It's not a quiet trimmer but the noise level is normal in my opinion. Lastly, it seems sufficiently sturdy and built to last for quite a while. Amazon also sells the replacement spools of line. I also purchased a six pack of replacement line spools that should carry me through the summer. If you have a small yard or area to maintain and are on a budget then I think you will be pleasantly surprised with this model trimmer.

Pleasantly surprised after disappointment with another product of the same brand
Long story short, I bought a Greenworks 20-Inch 40V Mower, is ok'ish, you can read my review here: https://www.amazon.com/gp/review/R16FESY08WC17?ref=pf_vv_at_pdctrvw_srp After attempting to mow my lawn with the above mentioned mower 4 times and only being able to complete the job with the included batteries once, I decided I needed an additional battery. Since my current gas powered trimmer is dying, I decided to buy this trimmer and kill two birds with one stone. The trimmer is awesome. Used twice already, and I can do the perimeter of the house using about 50% of the battery, maybe even less, which leaves me enough juice to complete the mowing. The auto-feed works like a charm. The main complaint I can see someone having is that the shaft is of a fixed length, thus someone shorter may have an issue with it. For me thought, it works great and I can't complaint about that. The trimmer itself feels sturdy, it is very powerful and gets the job done. Pricewise, bought it on sale, can't complain again... Five stars. Edit: After a year and some change of use, this trimmer is still awesome. If my review helped you in any way, please let me know by clicking the "helpful" button below. Any questions you may have, feel free to ask… Thank you!

Defective battery
Defective product. Didn’t get chance to test with in return period as we were not in need of lawn mowing at that time. Now , trying to fill warranty page but it sucks. The page is terrible and not moving forward at all. The battery is not charging at all. The charging station is showing red blink light

In the weeds a bit
Bought this weed eater a few months back along with a battery operated mower and blower - all from this manufacturer. The mower and blower received 5 stars - could not be happier with them. Easy operation. Great battery life. Quiet and well made. The weed eater is good. It is powerful and the battery life is long. My only complaint is with the automatic "string" feed. It works now and then - and so far, 2 times the line has disappeared and I have had to try and fish it out and retread it - which isn't as much fun as you would imagine!!! lol When it resupplies the line and doesn't disappear, it's great. But twice I've had to shelve it and come back later to fix the line and then finish weed eating the yard. Have I had similiar difficulties with electric and gas weed eaters - YES! Was just hoping things had evolved in the weed eater world. I highly recommend the brand. Love the fact I have 3 batteries I can use in any of the devices/tools - great job.
