Slot size
We use bread that is typically longer than a standard toaster, but not too long that a long-slot toaster is needed. The slots on this toaster are just a little longer, a little wider, and a little deeper than typical toasters. With the internal baskets, the toast comes out perfect.

Turns Bread into Toast
This is a functional basic toaster with a nice, retro design. The “Extra Wide Slot” feature kinda works (see explanation below).I tried to fit a 1” slice of baguette and it did not fit; the crust hit the square top corner of the wire inner cage. Cinnamon raisin bread, which is rather slim, did fit just fine. I think that “Extra Wide Slot” can work for something like a waffle (stiff, with some bevel to the edges), but due to the design you'll have to first open the inner cage to insert many types of food to take advantage of the 1-3/8” maximum opening.A thinner slice of baguette did toast evenly. The cinnamon raisin bread toasted unevenly. This is probably the ultimate test of even toasting due to the high sugar content; it reveals any difference caused by uneven side-to-side heat or the cage settling closer to one side than the other. On closer examination, it appears to me that the springs hold the cage nicely centered, so maybe the elements on each side are not heating identically. An unscientific test with my non-contact thermometer (looking down through the slot) seems to show a 10—20 degree difference. But my testing may be faulty since I don't know precisely what area is being measured; I'm just using the laser to aim it as similar spots on the right and left. Now I should admit that my fixation with even toasting is because I've been unhappy using a toaster oven to toast. I find that I have to watch my toast and flip it. The somewhat uneven toasting I've demonstrated with this Black+Decker (see my photo) is way less and not a deal breaker.I was also curious just how hot the shell of the toaster would get. The sides stay cool enough to touch, under 90 degrees. My non-contact thermometer registered nearly 200 degrees on the top corners. There's the expected crumb tray that slides out on the back side. The brushed stainless finish and overall build quality are fine.To summarize, this is a good, functional toaster that can accommodate thicker bread, bagels and waffles, but probably not in the same league as premium competitors.NOTE: The photo shows both sides of the same slice of bread; this illustrates the actual side-to-side variation in toasting.

Toasters Nightmare!
Do NOT under any condition purchase this model toaster. I have owned several Black & Decker toasters, none of which are not fantastic toasters but provided enough of a satisfaction when bang for the buck is considered. Fails to toast both sides of the bread evenly regardless of the setting. The toaster consistently burns the 'L' portion of the bread bottom eve when the next to the lowest setting. I bought Black & Decker toasters before and although the were not great they did provide me with enough satisfaction in regards to 'Bang for the Buck'.

Have regrets on this one
I bought this a little over a year ago after seeing all of the good reviews. It probably works great for regular sliced breads (according to some) but I prefer artisan breads, and it definitely does NOT toast evenly. It not only takes twice as long as my old toaster, but I typically have to position the toast differently mid toast session to make it more even. Would not recommend. Sorry

Smeg knockoff but sturdy.
It's okay. I've purchased a lot of toasters over the last couple of years. My OXO On 2-Slice Lever-Free Motorized Toaster died on me about ten months in. I'm not a fan of Hamilton Beach toasters because most just don't toast, they just heat kind of like this toaster, although this is a higher wattage toaster, so it works better. Cuisnart toasters are cheap, tinny, and poorly made from my experiences that I've had. This particular toaster has those stupid protective aluminium inserts which I don't like. I do like that it is higher wattage and doesn't have a lot of buttons on the front. I do believe if you want warmer, better toast, you can turn the button to the highest setting, and just cancel about half way through, but of course you have to monitor the toasting closely. This toaster only has 2 small squares on the front which adds to the clean look I'm looking for. I am looking to get a Smeg toaster and wish to get one one day. Why? Smeg doesn't have those stupid protective layers and it's clean looking. IMO, this is the closest you can get to a Smeg. Smeg 2-Slice Toaster-Chrome Pros with this toaster:sturdy and makes piping hot toast that is a nice light brown, just the way I prefer toast, toasts evenly, retro look3 years later, May 2020: Toaster served me well.

Great Toaster for the money! 3 years and still toasting! *Read Review*
Great toaster for the money. Extra long slot fits long pieces of sourdough etc. also fits bagels fine. Toasts evenly with no issues. We are happy with this toaster and we’ve used the heck out of it. I was just getting ready to replace this toaster today because the lever was starting to get a little stiff. I decide to (unplug the toaster) remove the 6 screws from the bottom of the toaster to see what was going on inside. What did I have to loose! I slid the stainless body off to inspect the lever and turns out the lever guide (the shaft the lever glides up and down on) just needed a very small amount of oil. I used a small amount of olive oil and put it all back together. The toaster works like new again. If you are handy give this a try before giving up on it. I used olive oil because I didn’t want a strong oil smell. I know I may have to pull the cover off and do it again at some point but I don’t mind. It’s super easy. The whole fix took about 10 mins. The screws are found underneath the small rubber feet and to small rubber covers. Also before you can pull the body of the toaster off, you need to pull off the plastic push handle attached to the lever. You’ll need a T15 torx bit to remove the screws on the bottom. Hope this helps someone.

Mediocre at best
Avoid this toaster and Black & Deckers' Customer Service. Bought the toaster after much research but when first used it was obvious that many of the heating elements in the toaster weren't getting hot (not visibly red). After 3 months of use fewer and fewer elements got hot - would barely toast anything.Contacted B&D who said they would replace the toaster but "did not have any of this model in stock" so they would send and equivalent toaster. What B&D sent us as a replacement was the cheapest toaster that they make (cheapest toaster listed on Amazon).Complained to Amazon about B&D customer service. Amazon stepped up and sent us a replacement of the same model, however it is a bad as the first one that we bought. Don't bother with this product.
