She Sang Promise: The Story of Betty Mae Jumper, Seminole Tribal Leader Review: Truly touching and inspiring story - I am very touched by this book. I loved the author's style of writing, it is so inviting. I also feel refreshed by the personality that is so vividly displayed through the author's words. She has inspired me as much as Betty Mae Tiger. The drawings are so peaceful and full of vibrant life. I am very touched by the illustrator who brought out the essence of these characters using colors and brushstrokes. Truly amazing. When I read this story, I am reminded of the power that we women have over our life, and the decisions we may have to make with courage and bravery. I am reminded that in a world that assumes us weak, or at best second place, that we can choose to not carry the burden of past, present, and future injustices. Instead, we can live out our lives being ourself, and standing up for ourselves and others when we are oppressed. Thereby changing history and creating the kind of world we wish it to be, just by being who we are. Review: Inspiring - Betty Mae Jumper is an inspiring biography depicting the challenges of a Seminole Indian woman facing discrimination and insurmountable challenges not many of us encounter and few could overcome as she did. The heartwarming story and beautiful illustrations make this book one that stays with you long after you put the book down and would be enjoyed by young and old alike. bio, not story
The pictures are great. The life it's telling about is great. However, this is a biography in the form of a picture book, so it's not captivating for a kid.

"She Sang Promise"
Jan Godown Annino's writing is like a fresh breeze off the glades. It is lyrical and vibrant and it is matched perfectly by illustrations that open bright, vivid windows on life in a traditional Seminole village. It is also a rare look at a form of discrimination not often discussed--Betty Mae Jumper was ostracized for having been fathered by a white man. This is a beautiful portrayal of a strong woman who overcomes her circumstances to becomes the first female leader of the Seminole Tribe.
