Catechism of the Catholic Church: Complete and Updated

This book is a must have reference manual for every Catholic. It provides a clear, well laid out version of Catholic beliefs and acts to provide rationales for the beliefs. For the newer Catholic, you may find this book a little daunting, perhaps purchasing an accompanying more simple book would be helful. I wish that I had purchased this item whilst I was studying theology at school, and before I was confirmed. In the short space of time I have owned the book it has served several times as a point of reference and clarification. Excellent value for money, well written and include footnotes. The preface from Pope John Paul II was an excellent and inspiring read.

The "Catechism of the Catholic Church" is the definitive source for anyone interested in the teachings of the Catholic Church on almost any topic on which the Church has taken an official position. The catechism, the first in four centuries, is divided into four parts. Each part is divided into Sections, Chapters, Articles and subordinate divisions. The principles of each article are summarized in a conclusion entitled "In Brief". The Catechism is well indexed. The footnotes provide citations to sources including the Bible, the writings of the Doctors of the Church, documents of Ecumenical Councils and other authoritative writings. Part One- "The Profession of Faith", begins with the sources of Revelation, followed by Man's Response to God's Revelation. It concludes with a clause by clause analysis of the ancient Creed of the Church. Part Two- "Celebration of the Christian Mystery" explains Church teachings on the liturgy and the sacraments through which God touches and nourishes the life of man. Part Three- "Life In Christ" presents the Church's teaching on Christian morality, including a study of each of the Ten Commandments. Part Four- "Christian Prayer" examines man's communication with God. The Catechism of the Catholic Church is an invaluable resource for anyone seeking the know the truths which the Catholic Church teaches. For the Catholic, it is a guide to a deeper understanding of the truths which we profess. For one investigating the Catholic Faith, the Catechism is a reliable presentation of the teachings from the highest ecclesiastical authority. Whether read in its entirety or consulted for a specific question, The Catechism of the Catholic Church deserves a place in every Catholic home as well as in the home of every seeker of truth.

Bizarre, this is1995, yet the most recent one was promulgated in 1997....

A refernce text to supplement earlier easy to read versions but unlikely as a first and only version to have

Easy to read, portable, beautiful and and overall great little reference book. This book is a must-have for Catholics. We are so fortunate as Catholics to have Church with can guide us and provide for us such a comprehensive guide to the Church and our Faith. You will gain so much knowledge just picking this book up and reading it for a few minutes every day, especially with all the resources available to guide us through it.

Excellent to use in conjunction with the bible.

I don't consider myself to be a Catholic or a Christian, however I do enjoy studying religion. As a part of my studies, I wanted to learn about the beliefs and practices of the Catholic Church. This book was excellent for that purpose. The book is well-structured and extremely comprehensive. It is not an easy book to read. It is long and assumes certain knowledge about Christian and Catholic theology. If you are looking for a "Catholicism for Dummies" type book, then this is not the book for you. However, if you want to know what the Catholic Church authorities say is doctrine and practice, and you are willing to put in the work outside of the book researching unfamiliar terminology, concepts, history, scripture, and so on, then you will find this book to be both highly engaging and educational. Beyond its contents, I found the book to be well constructed and in good condition. It is compact, but thick. It feels well bound and sturdy (especially considering its high page count). The font is on the smaller side, but I didn't have trouble reading it. And the paper is thinner than an average book, but thicker than the paper found in many bibles. I fully recommend this book if you want to understand Catholic doctrine, but don't expect it to be your typical non-fiction read.
