How to protect my fingers from hurting when knitting?? These tips are sharp

I am also a tight knitter and am working on loosen up, but in the meantime, when I need to knit with thin, sharp needles, I wear small bandaids on the tip of my right hand finger (am also a english style flicking knitter). Work on loosening up and building a little callous where you touch the needle tip. Good luck.

How long is the actual needle?

The metal ends are 5"' and the plastic they are joined to is long. Needles are great, somewhat like addi turbos, but much less expensive.

Is the 40" cable long enough to knit a 60" wide blanket?

It would depend on the weight of the yarn. I had light wt. yarn and the item I knitted, granted a lacy pattern, was about 64." (This was for a flounce at the bottom of a swing sweater.) Good luck.
