What small parts are there?

There are no small parts. The sticks are glued into the top. I did have 2 sticks come unglued almost immediately, so be careful of this. I had to reglue them

Do the sticks detach from the Popsicles?

No- they're affixed to their sticks. They are also more colourful than pictured!! 

are the paints used lead free ?

Yes- if you look on the Le Toy Van website, under "Our Story", you'll see their safety information including that they only use safety tested water, oil/ and or varnish.
