Gets the job done
I bought the 8,500 BTU ASHRAE / 5,000 BTU SACC model. It has performed well in a kids bedroom with full exposure to the afternoon sun. Set at 74°, it has no trouble maintaining that temperature while the temperature outside is well over 90°, even with the bedroom door standing open to the un-cooled 80° hallway. Nameplate rating is 9.0 amps, but it only draws that much at startup. Sustained draw is around 725w/6a, low enough that it would be possible to put a pair of these in two rooms which share an electrical circuit. It's a bit buzzy when running. I have a larger 12,000 BTU Whynter unit in another room and somehow that one is a bit quieter than this B&D unit. It's still a reasonable sound level, doesn't wake up my toddlers when it kicks on in the night or disrupt our bedtime stories. The "auto fan speed" mode that shuts the blower down when the compressor isn't running also is quite nice for some periods of silence, and isn't available on my Whynter. Window kit is thoughtfully designed and easy to assemble. It fit my window nicely using long and short pieces together, not fully extended. The kit also came with some self-adhesive foam weatherstripping for the edges of the window kit, a thoughtful touch. However the provided strips weren't long enough for my install, came up about half a foot short on each side, so it wasn't useful. You'd think if they thought to put it in, they'd put enough for when it's at full extension? The hose attachments at both ends are a good twist-and-lock design that's hard to accidentally pull apart. No storage cover/bags for the off-season, are provided, though. On-unit controls are very sensitive to accidental touch by kids and their toys (or just brushing up against it as you walk by). There's no child lock-out feature, so the only option is to tape a box over the controls. Many features can only be accessed from the remote anyway, and the remote does have a function display, so there's not a lot of downside to blocking the on-unit controls. Would buy again. No regrets.

works great in our little bedroom
We live in a small house that has a working AC unit, but it's old. The nights have gotten warm here in AZ, so instead of running the unit all night, to cool the whole house, we bought this. It takes a minute, as you have to vent it to the outside. We have casement windows, and that took a bit of tweaking, but we figured it out. The unit cools our bedroom immediately. It is about 100 square feet, and we close the door at night to keep the cool air in. The remote has a sleep mode, where it dims the light on top and will go off after six hours. We've kept the unit between 78 and 79 degrees, and at those temps, we have to use a sheet and a light blanket over us. So it has lots of power. It has a satisfying white noise when it runs, and when it gets to the temp you've selected, it goes off until the temp rises again. The fan doesn't run unless you turn that option on. It has wheels, so theoretically could be rolled from room to room, but then you'd have to figure out how to vent it. We're keeping ours in the bedroom. I would buy this unit again. Very happy to be cool at night and not stress over the old AC unit going out! I don't know about energy effeciency

Works really great!
I bought this for emergency purposes as where I live, when the a/c goes out, misery quickly ensues. I've had it for three years and thankfully, this is the first time I've needed it. It's super-easy to get going! The only thing you have to do is attach the expandable exhaust hose to the back and set up the window system (all of this is very easy). However, I didn't use it this way as I have window insets that are much too onerous to remove for a temporary purpose, and I only need to cool the room I'm in. With the exhaust ending in a doorway, and the door only about halfway closed, it still very quickly cools the space I'm in. My bedroom was actually cold in the morning while the rest of the house was in the 80's. This unit is HEAVY! Fortunately, it has wheels. You can choose to have continuous draining with the tubing that comes with, or you can do that manually - there is an automatic shut-off that lets you know the condensate needs to be drained. It has been on continually for 12 hours and nothing has come out of the tubing into the receptacle I've put under it, so I'm assuming that tank is pretty big. Obviously, the closer you are to the unit, the cooler you will be, but it has taken about 850sf (open area) down a degree in an hour, while the immediate area has gone down to near cold. I also imagine if it was exhausted to the outside, it would be cooler more quickly. The only downside is the noise. It's VERY noisy. It was hard to sleep, but it would have been impossible in the heat.

It works well for one room
It works well, I would just say that the thermostat is definitely off. For example, it might very warm in the room, the temp on the unit is set to 68 but the AC is not starting. In that case, I will just have to decrease it until the air starts blowing. Or vice versa, I might have to increase the temp to 75 just to get it to shut off. For me that's ok, I just don't pay may much attention to the number and instead if it's just off or on and it works fine.

Keeps my living room so nice snd cool.
I love everything about it. It’s quiet, I do wish it would’ve come with a longer extension for sliding glass doors. Nice clean cool air. I moved from Montana to Seattle and not many apartments have AC. My apartment is probably about 900 ft.² one bedroom one bath kitchen living room. It keeps my living room ice cold. I love the fact that once it gets to a certain temperature that it shuts off for a little bit. I would say it is so worth the money I paid for it and I’m on a pretty strict budget

My unit began leaking after approximately 1 week.
Everything about it was good really. I received it very quickly. It was easy to assemble. But my biggest mistake was I didn't set it up right away, so my return window had expired by the time it started leaking. Everything was going great until then. It cooled really well. and the noise was minimal. I called customer service immediately, and they said they would send me a return label so I could return it. That was on May 27. They sent me an email confirming that they would be sending me a label. By June 3rd I had still not gotten the return label. I called back and was again told they would send the label by end of the day. As I write this second review on June 14th. I have not received the return label. I am so disappointed. I chose the product because of the name Black and Decker, and I still was treated poorly. Amazon was unable to help due to return window expired. Now I am stuck with a broken air conditioner! Buyers Beware!!

Saving my sanity
For twelve years, I endured an upstairs room like an oven, because my rental has sliding windows. Finally, an appropriate portable that didn't cost the earth, very easy to install, and does a great job.
