The only part that could rust is the spine, and the blade, but it will rust alot less significantly than an uncoated machete (most decent machetes are carbon steel, so clean it off before you sheath it). To elaborate on that, this machete has a baked on finish, it's more than just paint, if you're worried about the rusting you could try the condor "hog sticker" machete's, they are stainless steel, and also smaller and lighter but still long enough.
