Second Edition Re-edited June, 2023 Also available as a printed omnibus containing all three books in the series from desertcart. It started as a typical day in a sleepy little coastal village. But little did they know everything was about to change forever. Corporal Joe Mills of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police arrives at Gallou Cove, certain the reported โsea monsterโ washed ashore would be nothing. What he found there on the beach chilled him to the core. Dr. Adele Kramer, a marine biologist, shows up to categorize the find. The creature defies any known life found on Earth. At least, nothing originating on the planet. So begins their introduction to โThe Otherโ, the secret world of cosmic horrors plaguing humanity since before the dawn of time. They soon find themselves drawn into a plot many millennia-old to prevent the end of all existence in the universe. Can they survive the Crawling Chaos and prevent He Who Lies Dreaming from awakening? This book is the first in a trilogy, containing six of eighteen linked novelettes and novellas meant to be read in order and set in H. P. Lovecraftโs Cthulhu Mythos. The book contains the following stories: It Came From The Sea: the remains of a mysterious creature is washed ashore on a small Cape Breton village, forever changing the lives of all who see it. It Slumbers Beneath The Ice: An ancient entity of cosmic evil lies trapped in the ice of the Canadian Arctic. A mysterious cult seeks to free it from its prison, an event the investigators rush to prevent. It Lives In The Woods: A cultist summons an entity from the Dreamlands and unleashes it on this world with deadly consequences. Hides In The Village: Small rural towns are breeding grounds for Mythos activity, where a dedicated group of followers assists The Black Pharoah in his plans to spread discord and chaos. It Lurks In The Basement: An investigator is recovering from her encounters with The Other when she learns of an entity of unspeakable evil imprisoned in the basement of a home in her neighbourhood. It Ends Where It Began: All of the investigators are brought together and return to the blighted Cape Breton village where their odyssey began and learn of the diabolical plan of a malign deity and one of the Mythosโ most active antagonists. The Happenings of December 13, 2012: The story of the investigatorโs mysterious handler, and how The Other first drew him into its web of terror. Review: That ending... - Solid writing and storytelling skills throughout. Believable characters. Premise has been done before, but author keeps it fresh (setting is Canada) and has added his own spin to Cthulhu Mythos. No spoilers here, but that ending...wow! Author doesnโt pull any punches. Very cool read, just bought book 2. Review: Good addition to the world of lovecraft - I really like how the author builds the characters and ties them to the story forcing their involvement. I like the fact that the authors characters also make one wonder which is worse facing madness or going mad. I also like the way the author end the story by giving the reader a partially clean slate. That I feel allows for Better blending from book to book. Well Written and make the reader want more.

Not bad
It was ok. The first story was great but itโs clear that was meant to be the only story in the book, and the rest grew out of it. The book has a โmade it up as I went alongโ feel. By the end the characters were acting extremely irrationally and making really stupid decisions. Beginning was great, the ending was atrocious.

Answer the Call... If you dare!
I've been a Cthulhu fan for most of my life. I've read Lovecraft, Derleth, Lumley, King and many other takes on the Mythos. The Other is a refreshing take on the Mythos in modern times. One of my biggest issues is the original stuff is such a dry read. That's not a problem here. The stories are crisp, fast paced and eerie as the original stuff! I can't wait to read the next book to find out what happens next!

โ"Light" and updated Cthulhu Read
Nice episodic collection of Cthulhu stories. Updating the mythos while paying it homage. The book provided an entertaining arc that was easy to digest it bits without losing momentum.

Great read!
Being a serious Cthulhu Mythos fan I admit I was a little hesitant about this modern take. But...I took a chance and ordered Book I of The Other. I was sucked right in by the the first story! Now I can say (with a sigh of pleasure) that I will definitely order the other two books! I love the main characters but hate what they have to go through because I am a very empathic reader. Thanks Troy Young, you really exceeded my expectations!!

Fun spin for HPL fans
I received an ad for this book through Facebook, and found the premise interesting. I bought it and am glad I did. Its a fun tribute with likeable characters and steady pacing. I'm buying book two as soon as I wrap up this review!

Interesting tales
Each chapter is a stand alone story. The book ends in a cliffhanger, leaving an opening for more one chapter stories in future books. This makes the size of the book manageable. I would probably read more of this story, but won't go out of my way, having that "been there done that" feeling.

Excellent book.
If you have any interest in the Cthulhu mythos, you should enjoy this book, which brings the Lovecraft stories into the present, with a compelling interweaving of Lovecraft's various short stories that established that mythos. I couldn't put the book down, and when I finished it I made plans to order the sequels.

An Interesting Read
A pretty enjoyable collection of short stories set in the mythos. The characters are fairly realistic in their reactions and were interesting to read, but the ending felt a little rushed/disappointing.

Good stories with a Canadian angle
The nice thing about these Lovecraft inspired stories is that they are all Canadian, in Canadian locations. It's nice to feel represented. The stories themselves are good enough and quick reads. I suspect this is a first novel and the writing style will improve in subsequent books (but it wasn't terrible or anything).
