What kind of batteries and how many?

I actually opened the battery cover and looked inside today, mine has two AA inside

does it come with putter

No, it does not come with a putter.

The set came with 12 very light plastic golf balls which do not activate the ball return mechanism. Is one supposed to use real golf balls?

The plastic practice balls are a bonus. You must use real golf balls for the putting practice return to work

How do you turn it on

No turn on switch, it is ready to go.
